THE PURSUIT FOR 1000
Kentucky State University football fell short on the road to Bene- Sophomore running back Brett Sylve enters Saturday’s contest with 971 rushing yards on the season, just 29 dict College, 20-16 at Charlie Johnson Stadium. If Sylve is able the accomplish the feat; he’ll be the first Thoroter to put BC inside the 10-yard line, Johnny Willis broke four tackles, scampering away for a 91-yard punt return touchdown, bred to do so since 2014 when Jacquise Lockett rushed for 1,064 yards in one season. During Lockett’s time, putting BC up for good at 20-16. Junior quarterback Michael Simpson finished with 126 yards off 11-of-31 through the air for he rushed for over 1,000 yards in both 2013 and 2014, one touchdown and one interception in his second career start. leading the SIAC in rushing yards each of the two seasons. Only one other Thorobred has reached the milestone In his first career start, freshman linebacker Kenneth Horn led in the last 10 years, and it came in 2009 when Anthony KSU in tackles with nine, along with a sack. Boykins picked up 1031 yards on the ground.
SIAC POSTSEASON HONORS
Three KSU football players were selected for five spots on this year’s all-conference squads. Sophomore running back Brett Sylve was named to three separate positions between the first and second teams as a running back, kick returner, and punt returner. Junior offensive tackle Marcus Campbell was selected for all-conference honors for the third consecutive season as he was appointed to the second-team. On defense, senior defensive end Rodriquez Jones was the lone representative of the Thorobreds as he was named to the first team.
HISTORIC RUN IN 2016
The 2016 season proved to be one to remember for KSU as head coach John L. and his staff led the Thorobreds to their first ever SIAC West Division Championship. The 4-7 record may not show much, but 2016 provided multiple accolades including a win dramatic win against #5 ranked Tuskegee University on the road, SIAC yearly awards with the coach of the year and freshman of the year, and the first Thorobred to record over 100 tackles in a season in over two decades.
YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR 2018
Injuries have riddled the Thorobreds in 2017, knocking out various members of the senior class out of the lineup, including all-conference preseason running back Lavelle Cloyd and senior safety Ora “Bo” Johnson. Against Benedict College, only three seniors saw significant playing time, opening the door for a youth movement. Notable names to make an impact are freshman linebacker Kenneth Horn, sophomore linebacker Chris Crawley, sophomore defensive tackle Chris Roberts, and freshman offensive tackle Eliezer Hernadez.
NATIONALLY RANKED
Sylve has registered over 150 all-purpose yards in eight of ten games. He leads the SIAC in all-purpose yards with 1,897 total yards and 189 yards a game. His amount of total yards and yards per game rank among the top-five in all of NCAA Division II as he sits at No. 5. Leading the way is junior running back Trenton Cannon of Virginia State University with 2,455 yards and 232 yards per game.
2017 KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL Game #11 Thorobreds (3-7, 2-4) At Alabama A&M (3-7, 3-4) Saturday, Nov. 18 -- 2:00 P.M. ET-- Louis Crews Stadium -- Huntsville, Ala.
JOHN L. SMITH-- 2ND SEASON AT KSU (7-15) 157-127 (.552) -- 24TH SEASON AS A HEAD COACH John L. Smith took over as head coach of the Kentucky State football program in December 2015. In his first season, Smith led KSU to a historical campaign, notching the program’s first ever SIAC West Division Championship and a spot in the conference championship game. The Thorobreds finished the season 4-7 with monumental back-to-back nail bitting wins against Miles College and #5 Tuskegee University. The win against the Golden Tigers was the first win by KSU against a nationally ranked top five opponent, since joining the NCAA Division II rankings in 1988. At the conclusion of the season, six Thorobreds were named to the AllConference squad while Smith was named the SIAC Coach of the Year. Before his time with KSU, Smith spent three seasons at Division II Fort Lewis College, where he inherited a team that had been 0-10 in 2012 and posted a 7-4 record this year, equaling the program’s best record in 40 years. Prior to his time at Fort Lewis, Smith served as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas from 2009-11 before serving as the team’s head coach for one season in 2012. He also spent four seasons at Michigan State, where he went 22-26 from 2003-06 and won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003. In addition to the Big Ten Coach of the Year award, Smith was a national finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2000. He has made 12 postseason bowl or playoff appearances, and he is one of just 19 coaches in collegiate football history to take three different schools to bowl games. Before his time at Michigan State, Smith went 41-21 at Louisville from 1998-2002, a stretch that included five straight winning seasons, five straight bowl appearances, and two conference championships. Smith also has head coaching stops at Utah State University as well as the University of Idaho, where he went 53-21 from 1989-94 and left as the school’s winningest head coach. An Idaho Falls native, Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Mathematics from Weber State University, where he was a linebacker and quarterback in his collegiate playing days. He also holds a Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of Montana. In addition to his head coaching experience, Smith has served in various assistant coaching roles at Idaho, Weber State, and Montana, as well as with the University of Nevada, University of Wyoming, Washington State University, and the St. Louis Rams.

ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS
At the beginning of 2016 fall camp, upwards of 100 student-athletes walked on to the practice field of head coach John L. Smith’s first season with KSU football. Following a successful first season where the Thorobreds reached new heights, the start of the 2017 camp saw numbers excel past 140 student-athletes vying for an opportunity to take the field on Saturdays at Alumni Stadium. Going into the opening game of the 2017 season, over 63 student athletes help make up the roster that was not on the 2016 active roster. Of those 63 players, 47 of them are true freshmen, including six others who will be red shirted.
Welcome and Welcome Back
Along with several new names on the field, the Thorobreds welcome a few familiar names and two new ones on the sidelines in 2017. Joining the football staff as the assistant head coach and secondary coach is Wade Green. Green was the defensive coordinator at the United States Military Preparatory School from 2009-2016. Another new name will be tight ends coach Tobijah Hughley. Football fans of the Commonwealth may remember Hughley as a member of the University of Louisville football team from 2013-2016. Two familiar names to the coaching staff are running backs coach Matthew Amburgey and graduate assistant Ray Malone. Both Amburgey and Malone are graduates of KSU and former players. Malone was a part of the 2016 West Division Championship team and was named the Most Valuable Player for the Thorobreds in the conference championship game.
