LAST TIME OUT- 2016 SIAC CHAMPIONSHIP Kentucky State University football lost a thrilling 33-30 double overtime SIAC Championship game to Fort Valley State University in Montgomery, Alabama at the Cramton Bowl. The three person running back crew of Lavelle Cloyd, Reginal Harris, and Damontre Warr combined for 199 yards on the ground. Cloyd led the group with 123 yards and a touchdown. Junior defensive end Rodriguez Jones finished as the Thorobreds leading tackler with ten wrap-ups, all solo, and two tackles for a loss.

NEW FACES IN THE CAPITAL CITY

The Thorobreds will feature at least 10 new names and faces within their starting offensive and defensive lineup. Notable names on offense include junior quarterback Paul Campbell, junior left tackle Kameron Gomness, and junior tight end Joseph Castellanos. On the defensive side, the linebacking core and defensive line will see the most overhaul. Inside linebacker Phillip Francis will make his debut for KSU as he redshirted during the 2016 season, and he’ll be joined by junior inside linebacker Andre Miles. In the trenches, the Thorobreds will have juniors Jalen Dingle and Eddie Jones looking to apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks.

HISTORIC RUN IN 2016

The 2016 season proved to be one to remember for KSU as head coach John L. and his staff led the Thorobreds to their first ever SIAC West Division Championship. The 4-7 record may not show much, but 2016 provided multiple accolades including a win dramatic win against #5 ranked Tuskegee University on the road, SIAC yearly awards with the coach of the year and freshman of the year, and the first Thorobred to record over 100 tackles in a season in over two decades.

OFF TO THE RACES

Under first year offensive coordinator Micheal Digman, KSU saw improvements week after week in the rushing attack during 2016. The Thorobreds ranked No. 2 in the SIAC with 167 yards per game on the ground, while totaling 287 yards of offense overall, ranking them No. 5 within the conference. Lavelle Cloyd will look to make an impact in his senior season as the top returning rusher. In his last three games as a junior, Cloyd racked up 280 rushing yards, compared to only 31 yards in the first seven games of the season.

SIAC PRESEASON HONORS

Five members of the 2017 squad were honored by the SIAC in July with spots on the first and second AllConference teams. Senior defensive lineman Rodriquez Jones and junior offensive lineman Marcus Campbell Jr. were selected to the Conference first team, while senior running back Lavelle Cloyd, junior linebacker Keonte Reynolds, and senior defensive back Ryan Luckett were named to the second team. KSU was picked to finish third in the standings, behind TU and MC of the West division. The Thorobreds picked up two first place votes, after being picked to finish last in 2016.

JONES WITH NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Rodriquez Jones was named to the Black College Football Player of the Year watch list by the Black College Football Hall of Fame in early August. Since arriving at the Capitol City as a transfer from Hampton University, Jones made his presence known. During his junior season, he picked up 75 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, and 4.5 sacks.

2017 KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL Game #1 Thorobreds (0-0,) VS. Slippery Rock University (0-0,) Saturday, Sept. 2 -- 1:30 P.M. ET--Alumni Stadium-- Frankfort, Ky.

JOHN L. SMITH-- 2ND SEASON AT KSU (4-7) 154-120 (.564) -- 24TH SEASON AS A HEAD COACH John L. Smith took over as head coach of the Kentucky State football program in December 2015. In his first season, Smith led KSU to a historical campaign, notching the program’s first ever SIAC West Division Championship and a spot in the conference championship game. The Thorobreds finished the season 4-7 with monumental back-to-back nail bitting wins against Miles College and #5 Tuskegee University. The win against the Golden Tigers was the first win by KSU against a nationally ranked top five opponent, since joining the NCAA Division II rankings in 1988. At the conclusion of the season, six Thorobreds were named to the AllConference squad while Smith was named the SIAC Coach of the Year. Before his time with KSU, Smith spent three seasons at Division II Fort Lewis College, where he inherited a team that had been 0-10 in 2012 and posted a 7-4 record this year, equaling the program’s best record in 40 years. Prior to his time at Fort Lewis, Smith served as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas from 2009-11 before serving as the team’s head coach for one season in 2012. He also spent four seasons at Michigan State, where he went 22-26 from 2003-06 and won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003. In addition to the Big Ten Coach of the Year award, Smith was a national finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2000. He has made 12 postseason bowl or playoff appearances, and he is one of just 19 coaches in collegiate football history to take three different schools to bowl games. Before his time at Michigan State, Smith went 41-21 at Louisville from 1998-2002, a stretch that included five straight winning seasons, five straight bowl appearances, and two conference championships. Smith also has head coaching stops at Utah State University as well as the University of Idaho, where he went 53-21 from 1989-94 and left as the school’s winningest head coach. An Idaho Falls native, Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Mathematics from Weber State University, where he was a linebacker and quarterback in his collegiate playing days. He also holds a Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of Montana. In addition to his head coaching experience, Smith has served in various assistant coaching roles at Idaho, Weber State, and Montana, as well as with the University of Nevada, University of Wyoming, Washington State University, and the St. Louis Rams.

2017 KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL Game #1 Thorobreds (0-0,) VS. Slippery Rock University (0-0,) Saturday, Sept. 2 -- 1:30 P.M. ET--Alumni Stadium-- Frankfort, Ky.

ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS

At the beginning of 2016 fall camp, upwards of 100 student-athletes walked on to the practice field of head coach John L. Smith’s first season with KSU football. Following a successful first season where the Thorobreds reached new heights, the start of the 2017 camp saw numbers excel past 140 student-athletes vying for an opportunity to take the field on Saturdays at Alumni Stadium. Going into the opening game of the 2017 season, over 63 student athletes help make up the roster that was not on the 2016 active roster. Of those 63 players, 47 of them are true freshmen, including six others who will be red shirted.

Welcome and Welcome Back

Along with several new names on the field, the Thorobreds welcome a few familiar names and two new ones on the sidelines. Joining the football staff as the assistant head coach and secondary coach is Wade Green. Green was the defensive coordinator at the United States Military Preparatory School from 2009-2016. Another new name will be tight ends coach Tobijah Hughley. Football fans of the Commonwealth may remember Hughley as a member of the University of Louisville football team from 2013-2016. Two familiar names to the coaching staff are running backs coach Matthew Amburgey and graduate assistant Ray Malone. Both Amburgey and Malone are graduates of KSU and former players. Malone was a part of the 2016 West Division Championship team and was named the Most Valuable Player for the Thorobreds in the conference championship game.
