2017 WULAX Boys Summer Program There are some significant changes coming in 2017 for our boys program. We felt it would be helpful to cover some of the changes, along with touching on guidelines used for creating teams, prior to registration. Additionally, the 2017 Black & Blue Tournament is scheduled for July 14 – 16, so please make sure to mark your calendars. As in previous years, you will be required to fulfill your volunteer hours at this tournament. We are planning to open summer registration around January 1st. Similar to last season, we will hold early season clinics as part of your summer fee in the Bielenberg Fieldhouse starting in March. Evaluations will be held late March / early April with team practices starting later in April. More information regarding the season will follow once YLM (Youth Lacrosse of Minnesota www.youthlaxmn.com) sets all the dates. Age Segmentation YLM has made the decision to adopt the recommended age segmentation guidelines set forth by US Lacrosse. This means Woodbury United Lacrosse (“WULAX”) will offer teams for the following age groups: U8, U10, U12 and U14. Below is a table showing the birthdate range for each level.
8th graders born between June 1, 2002 and September 1, 2002 will be allowed to play U14. U8 will play 5v5 with no goalies, and U10 will follow rules similar to the U9 program in previous season which is 7v7 with a goalie. Again, we will provide the updated rules for each age group once published by YLM. As a result of the new age groupings, the “WULAX” Board is currently looking at a “new player” clinic / program to replace the U7 program we’ve had in the past. This will allow older kids to get an introduction to lacrosse that aren’t interested in participating on a team. Team Formation The intent of “WULAX” will be to offer an “A” team at the U12 and U14 age groups. If there’s more than one (1) team at the U8 and U10 age groups, even teams will be created. The same goes for multiple “B” teams at the U12 and U14 age groups. “WULAX” will hold player evaluations in March/April. They will be run by 3rd party evaluators to ensure fair, and unbiased assessments of the players’ occurs. The goal of “WULAX” will be to place every registered player on a team. In the event the numbers are such that your son is not placed on a team as determined by the player evaluation, a full refund will be provided. The registration process allows for a percentage of "nonresident" players, meaning non-resident players of the city of Woodbury, or players who don’t
attend District #833 schools. Due to this process, first consideration will be given to Woodbury “residents” when teams are formed. Additional policies related to team formation can be found on our website (www.woodburyunitedlax.com). US Lacrosse Age Verification Similar to previous seasons, each player must be a registered member of US Lacrosse. US Lacrosse membership information can be found on their website (uslacrosse.org). US Lacrosse has implemented changes to their age verification process for 2017. Per US Lacrosse, “The US Lacrosse Age verification system supports the organization’s player segmentation policy, passed by its Board of Directors in January 2016. Player segmentation helps to ensure player safety, competitive fairness and a consistent experience for youth lacrosse.”
We are very excited for the upcoming season and look forward to having your son be a part of our program. Please contact us by sending questions or inquiries through our website: (www.woodburyunitedlax.com/contact) Sincerely, Woodbury United Lacrosse
