2018 Advanced Academics Summer Assignment AP Chemistry Dayton High School Mrs. Smith [email protected]

Due Date: 08/24/18 Welcome to AP Chemistry! The purpose of this assignment is to prepare you for the concepts and skills needed to be successful in the fun, challenging, and rigorous coursework of AP Chemistry. This course is structured around the six Big Ideas in the AP Chemistry curriculum framework provided by the College Board.   

Big Idea 1: Structure of matter o Textbook Chapters 1, 2, 3, 6, & 7 Big Idea 2: Properties of matter o Textbook Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 Big Idea 3: Chemical reactions o Textbook Chapters 3, 4, 5, 16 & 20

  

Big Idea 4: Rates of chemical reactions o Textbook Chapter 14 Big Idea 5: Thermodynamics o Textbook Chapters 5 & 19 Big Idea 6: Equilibrium o Textbook Chapters 15, 16 & 17

This assignment is designed to review some of the key information from first year chemistry that we will be using in AP Chemistry throughout the year. It is very important that you are able to master these concepts by the end of summer. You must read through all the notes and complete all problems from the notes. Many of the problems give you the final answer so you are able to check and see if you were right. You must show your work for all problems even if it is as simple as multiplying something by 10 or 100. Whenever units are given in a problem your final answer must also include units. Again, you must show your work to get credit for the problems.

Google Classroom code: y85b83 Everyone must join Google Classroom and Remind. What supplies will I need? • Large Spiral Notebook (3-5 subject) • Notes, Practice, and Labs • Scientific Calculator TI-36X Pro is strongly recommended • Available from Amazon.com for about $20 • Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam AP Test prep book • Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, etc. have it for about $15 • Highly recommended by AP Chemistry Students

Remind code: @19apchem

Assignment #1 Chapters 1 & 2 (pdf of this text is on Google Classroom) • CHAPTER NOTES & EXERCISES ARE DUE ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 Part 1: Chapter Notes • Using the printed outline, read these chapters and annotate the provided outline.  This involves underlining important points that you want to remember and writing comments and questions in the margins. (See “Annotating a Text”) • Using your spiral, title the 1st page of the 1st section: Chapter 1 Notes  Define each of the Key Terms in your own words.  Summarize the key points from each chapter using bullet points.  Repeat for Chapter 2 Part 2: Practice Exercises • Using your spiral, title the 1st page of the 2nd section: Chapter 1 Practice  Using the Sample Exercises (found on pages 11-30 for Chapter 1 and pages 45-67 for Chapter 2) from the text as a guide, work the corresponding Practice Exercises completely. • You must show your work for all problems.  Repeat for Chapter 2

Assignment #2 Memorize Elements & Ions • Many of these you will already know, but making flashcards is helpful! • Element Names and their corresponding symbols • Memorize the element symbols and names (with correct spelling) for elements #1-86 (exclude elements #58-71). • Ionic charges of the basic ions • Periodic Group charges – Think about the valance electrons! • Transition Metal charges: • Zn = +2, Ag = +1, Cu = +1 or +2, Fe = +2 or +3, Sn = +2 or +4, Pb = +2 or +4 • Polyatomic Ion Names and Charges • Pay attention to prefixes, endings, etc. • THERE WILL BE A QUIZ DURING THE WEEK OF 8/27-8/31.

Be sure to complete all of this work BEFORE school starts. Make sure you read and understand the expectations. If you have any questions, feel free to come see me before school is out. You may also text me through Remind or email me over the summer. I look forward to meeting you in the fall,

Polyatomic Ions A mastery of the common ions, their formulas and their charges, is essential to success in AP Chemistry. You are expected to know all of these ions. You will always be allowed a periodic table, which makes identifying the ions on the left “automatic.” There will be a quiz on these and the element names during the 3rd week of school.
