2018 Advanced Academics Summer Assignment AP Studio Art 2-D Design Dayton High School Teacher: Brittany Sciacca [email protected] Secondary Contact: Cathy Hamm (DHS Instructional Coach) [email protected]

Due Date: August 20, 2018 Course Overview: AP Studio Art 2-D Design is an Advanced Placement course designed to prepare students for college level Fine Arts courses through the creation and preparation of a portfolio. The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. The 2-D Design portfolio has a basic, three-section structure, which requires the student to show a fundamental competence and range of understanding in visual concerns (and methods). The portfolio asks the student to demonstrate a depth of investigation and process of discovery through the Sustained Investigation section (Section II). In the Range of Approaches section (Section III), the student is asked to demonstrate a serious grounding in visual principles and material techniques. The Selected Works section (Section I) permits the student to select the works that best exhibit a synthesis of form, technique, and content.

What to Expect from AP Studio Art 2-D Design:      

Students will be given weekly sketchbook assignments meant to help explore various techniques, themes, and ideas for deeper meaning. Students will have to select and submit for approval a “concentration” topic which they will explore for the Sustained Investigation section of their portfolio. Students will spend the first semester building their “breadth” section of their portfolio which demonstrates mastery of multiple techniques and media. Students will explore their selected concentration topic Spring Semester and generate a piece of work or multiple pieces of work that explore this concentration topic. Students will learn how to talk about and critique their art as well as the art of their peers using artistic language and vocabulary. Students will spend time staging and photographing their portfolio to prepare for digital submission to the College Board where it will be scored.

AP Summer Assignments: Students must complete a selection of summer assignments which will be graded upon return the following school year. Completion of these assignments is a requirement for continuing in the AP program. These assignments are meant to help maintain and continue to improve technique and skill, as well as helping students to begin to form ideas for sustained investigation. -

Size requirements for all projects: No smaller than 8” X 10” and no larger than 18” X 24” Assignments can be completed in an 8.5” X 11 “ sketchbook Student can use whichever media they are most comfortable with and you may mix mediums

*DESIGN PROBLEM #1-Compose a mixed media drawing using the three types of implied line, cross-hatch, doodle, and pointillism, showing three different values, and a non-objective subject matter. Show strong contrast between the positive and negative space in the composition. *DESIGN PROBLEM #2-Compose a monochromatic still life drawing using cool colors, creating three different values, and showing a painterly quality of the refraction of an object. The drawing should reflect the use of asymmetrical balance. *DESIGN PROBLEM #3-Compose a portrait contour drawing using three types of line to develop and add mass to the figure. Show strong contrast between the positive and negative space in the composition. *DESIGN PROBLEM #4-Compose an abstract drawing using shapes and forms by using a combination of two color complements in a radial balance design. *DESIGN PROBLEM #5-Compose an interesting one-point perspective drawing, developing both the positive and negative parts to the drawing. This drawing should be representational of the expressionism style. *DESIGN PROBLEM #6-Compose a drawing using simple forms to create depth, a three-dimensional quality in three forms, and a feeling of rhythm and movement throughout the piece. All projects will be graded as individual assignments. The grades for these projects will be determined by the quality and craftsmanship of the work, how well the student solved the design problem, and through a one-on-one discussion of the process involved in completing the assignments.
