Easy to grow, they are useful for crafting highly personal gardens in keeping with sustainable natural communities, family interests, health needs and hobbies. Their ornamental and fragrant attributes blend artfully to create high performance landscapes. The fundamentals of choosing herbs that complement your lifestyle and home landscape will be covered. Choosing the right plant, for the right place and the right person. 10:00 Presentation by Susan Betz Thymely Tips and Sage Advice Herbs serve a multitude of household uses. This presentation will focus on drying, freezing and storing your herbal harvest for future use. Learn how to make herb seasonings, vinegars, drinks, fragrant potpourris and natural cleaning products. Participants will receive samples & recipes. 11:00 Break 11:15 Alana Haley’s Herbal Cocktail Hour Tasting Presentation Herbs are front and center in the current cocktail craze. Alana will share ways to use herbs to kick up your cocktail game. If you’re not a drinker, all recipes can be adapted to be enjoyed liquor free. The presentation will include tastings sans alcohol. You’ll have to use your imagination as to what they would taste like with your favorite spirit! 12:00 Herb-Themed Lunch featuring Mixed Greens Salad, Cheesy Potato Dill Soup & Chicken Salad Sandwiches with a Q&A Session
1:00 Alana Haley’s Herbal Tea Make-and-Take Herbs are used to create beverages in many ways; most often, as tea. Teas may be blended to highlight a favorite flavor, to aid a medical ailment, or for general wellbeing. Alana will lead you through how to create your own blend to take home. We’ll enjoy some iced tea tastings to inspire you. 1:45 Break featuring Lavender & Rosemary Glazed Scones for Dessert 2:00 Presentation by Diane Brown-Rytlewski - Hops Hops, the 2018 Herb of the Year, have historically been used for many purposes in addition to brewing. Alana Haley of Ellsworth has been an organic herb and gardening enthusiast for over 25 years. After relocating from Chicago, she installed a large working herb garden and produced teas and aromatherapy items which she marketed through how-to workshops and formal teas hosted in her home. Alana also worked at Pine Hill Nursery in Kewadin for 8 years and is passionate about using herbs and whole foods for health and wellbeing.

Susan Betz is an author, garden communicator, lecturer and conservationist who has specialized in herbs and native plants for over 35 years. She is a past president of the Michigan Herb Associates, International Herb Association, Garden Writers Association and Ecological Landscape Alliance. As a life member of The Herb Society of America, Susan serves on HSA’s Native Herb Conservation committee, the Green Bridges committee and the Sustainable Garden Initiative. The Jonesville resident is author of Magical Moons & Seasonal Circles. Susan’s new book is Neighboring With Nature: Native Herbs For Purpose and Pleasure.

Diane Brown-Rytlewski obtained a B.S. in Entomology and an M.S. in Plant Pathology from the University of Wisconsin. In her 17 years with Michigan State University, she has worked with Michigan hop growers to create resources for a developing industry, worked with commercial fruit growers, served as a field crops pathologist and Nursery and Landscape IPM Integrator.
