22nd May 2018 Winyates News Wow! I am amazed to find that another half term has rushed by… What a busy and exciting one we have had! A successful OFSTED; some great class trips and sporting events and a brilliant week for our year sixes with their SATs. I am sure you would like to join me in thanking all our staff who have worked hard to support our year six children during their SATs: from the exercise to wake them; the amazing breakfast they all had; to everyone in school supporting by being quiet and allowing them to focus (not forgetting our fantastic year six team!. We are all enjoying the sun and its lovely to see children in summer uniform making the most of our fantastic outside area (what lucky children they are to have such an exciting play area) -please don’t forget how changeable things can be so coats should always come to school. As always, we thank you for your continued support of the school, it is only when we work as a tem that we can achieve great things for our children. Attendance and Punctuality Class attendance for the week prior to Easter was: Reception 94.67% Year 1 94.00% Year 2 96.34% Year 3 99.64% Year 4 96.67% Year 5 98.00% Year 6 96.90% School overall 96.58% Mrs Bowles Head of School
Year 6 The Iguanas Well done to all the Year 6’s that took their SATs last week. They were determined, focused and ready for the challenge!
Each morning they enjoyed a cooked breakfast before the daily revision and tests. On Friday, as an end of SATs treat, we went to Ferry Meadows. We all enjoyed a game of rounders and football, along with den building and a play on the park. We even had a visit from Miss Marriott while we were there! We are now focusing on writing, starting with a newspaper report and non-chronological report. Please can we have the trip return slip back asap, thank you.
Sports News Yesterday we took two teams to the Year 3 Orton Rounders tournament. This was a brilliant afternoon with all the children really enjoying themselves and playing some excellent rounders. Overall there were 6 teams and the B team managed to finish 4th, while the A team finished in 1st position! Well done to all of the players. Club News There will be no clubs running in the first week back after half term, as clubs will be changing for the final part of the year. Year 2 The Giraffes We have butterflies!!! The children were fascinated and excited to watch one of the butterflies emerge from its chrysalis.
Year 4 The Monkeys The Monkey Class have been working on a number of cross curricular activities to support our topic on water. In English we have been working on a persuasive letter to prevent the canals from closing. To aid this we have created a persuasive poster and had a number of key discussions about why we need the canal system and how it would affect the government. This meant that it had an emotive section for the families and a personal effect of the people who were trying to close it. In science we worked with water and the impact of applying a heat source. This week we are busy finalising this terms learning and setting the conditions for a successful last term, so that they are ready for the move to Year 5. Year 5 The Butterflies We are all looking forward to our visit to the Key Theatre today where we will be learning all bout the stage and performing, even getting the chance to go on stage in our group and perform a poem. This week is our last swim until Year 6, so we are hoping to have fun on the floats. Thank you for your support towards the cost of this activity.
Have a lovely half term break, please make every effort to read with your child and complete the homework.
Reception The Busy Bees This week we continue our learning around ‘The Little Red Hen’ by reading an alternative version ‘The Little Red Hen makes a pizza’. You cant read a story about making a pizza without actually making one, so on Thursday afternoon our classroom will be turned into the Little Red Hen’s kitchen where we will be reading and following instructions to make our own pizzas. We are also going to become bread taste testers this week scoring different breads out of 10 and writing reviews of them (I like the tomato bread because….) In number time this week we are continuing our work on position and direction; making maps and programming the Beebots to move to different places. We are also going to be directing a partner wearing a blindfold; this will require our very best team work and listening skills. The children are really excited about their trip to Moors Farm tomorrow and are intrigued to find out what animals they will see. Please make sure your child is in school on time tomorrow and they come with a sun hat and sun cream that are named. They also need to be wearing wellington boots for safety reasons as specified by the farm. Please make sure your child is also in school uniform. Thank you. Following our trip on Wednesday the children will be recalling all the exciting things we did whilst there and what we saw in a written
recount. We will be challenging them to use some special vocabulary in their writing such as first, next, then. I cant wait to read their recounts. This week is full of excitement as we are also inviting Zoo lab in to school to talk about minibeasts. Our caterpillars are growing well and will soon be in the next stage of growth in a chrysalis. They have been busy making webs and munching through their pot of food.
Last week our visit from Milly Molly the hen was amazing! The children fully absorbed themselves in the learning and were fascinated to find out lots of facts about her; what she likes to eat, what the different parts of her body are called, where she lives and how to care for her . Some of the children were in total awe and some fantastic observational drawings were created throughout the day.
Sleep Clinics at Winyates
Year 1 The Bears
Does your child struggle to fall asleep? Do they wake in the night or share your bed? Sleep is very important for a child’s learning, development and physical well-being. Lack of sleep can impact on a child’s behaviour, health and their ability to learn and concentrate in school. Sleep Clinics take place on a Monday morning with Mrs Clarke. Please contact the office to request an initial telephone consultation.
This week we are looking at how to write instructions in Literacy. We have been busy looking at and highlighting the features of instructions. We have been looking closely at imperative verbs (bossy words) as we have discovered that instructions always begin with these, such as ‘Wash your hands’ or ‘Go to bed’. Towards the end of the week we are going to be writing our own instructions for how to plant a sunflower seed. In Maths we are going to be looking at different ways of grouping using objects to begin with then moving onto numbers. We are really looking forward to our ‘ZOO Lab’ visit on Friday, I wonder what creatures we will meet? I hope all Year 1 have a safe and happy half term.
