attendance (there were three requests for 23rd Flight membership applications). As usual, the social hour was full of laughter and good camaraderie as many exciting war stories were recounted. It is rumored that there may have been some degree of truth in a few of the tales of daring exploits.

Lockheed Aero VP, Gen Gary North, USAF (Ret), walked with the Flight around the world

Please take note that our annual golf tournament will take place in the afternoon before our next meeting on April 16th. Harvey Stewart is in charge and promises that a great time will be had by all participants. For those of you who are

still lucky enough to be working, please try to adjust your schedules so that you can participate. Tournament details are contained in this copy of the Flyer. We were honored to have General Gary North, USAF (Ret.) as our speaker this March. General North had a distinguished Air Force career that spanned more than 36 years. He held numerous key operational, command and staff positions, including Commander, Pacific Air Forces; and executive director, Pacific Air Combat Operations Staff, where he was responsible for all U. S.

His riveting presentation was focused on the worldwide military threat and the rapid progress of the F-35 as it enters service with the Air Force, Marines, and Navy. I will not attempt to re-create his presentation but will mention a few of the facts that I found to be significant (and can remember). • Our three greatest external threats are Russia, China, and radical Islam • Our armed forces are tired and much of our equipment is worn out We enjoy paying the piper, Flight Treasurer Dave Shanahan, and apparently he enjoys taking our money

Air Force operations in the Pacific. This position also included serving as the Joint Force Air Component Commander for U. S. Pacific Command. He also served as the Commander of U. S. Air Forces Central Command from 20062009, where he was responsible for all Air Force operations in the Middle East. General North served as the Combined Forces Air Component Commander for U. S. Central Command throughout the CENTCOM area of responsibility for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of most interest to us as Daedalians is that he is a command pilot with more than 4,700 flying hours primarily in the F-4G, F-15, and F-16. He is a graduate of

the Air Force F-16 Fighter Weapons School and flew 83 combat missions in Operations Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. General North is also a life member of Daedalians and Ken Wallace gave him the papers to join Flight 23. We hope to see him at many future meetings. General North is currently the Vice President for Customer Requirements for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company. His primary responsibility is ensuring Lockheed Martin fulfills United States and international F-35 customer requirements. He also ensures that requirements for F-35 industrial partners around the world are met.

• We have been at war continuously since 1991 • The average age of Air Force planes is 25 years • Many of our combat troops have been to the front eight to ten times • The Air Force is half the size it was during the Cold War • Our enemies are modernizing their weapons, planes, and fleets • China is building aircraft carriers to project their strength • New Russian and Chinese aircraft look a lot like our newest fighters (but they do not have the capabilities) • SAM development, both fixed and mobile, is a top priority for both Russia and China In order to counter this threat, we must: • Develop a national attitude that supports our Armed Forces and sends a clear message to our enemies • Continue to develop directed energy weapons • Strengthen our Joint Forces approach to warfare

Although you can’t see much of it, Dick Jones was presented a plaque for his dedicated service to the Flight. His wines have been raffeled off for decades to help support the Flight’s Scholarship Program

• Continue to field new fighters and tanker General North gave us a good overview

of the F-35 progress. In short, the program is on track with deliveries being made according to schedule. The deployment bases have been selected and most importantly, the cost of the F-35 program is steadily decreasing. The capabilities of the F-35 are amazing and I encourage all of you to go on line and do some reading about the capabilities of this 5th generation aircraft. I hope to see all of you next month and don’t forget that April marks the return of business casual attire.
