John and Alice Egan Multiyear Scholarship. National will make the selection for this scholarship in August. Mitchell has developed and teaches a course on how to become a rated officer (he did this without help of the ROTC staff). In addition, he has a pilot training slot. Dick Jones reported that he has been able to get Flight members to present most of the more than forty local Daedalian JROTC awards that will be presented this year. A salute goes out to those who have volunteered.

Please take note that our annual golf tournament that was originally scheduled for April will take place in the afternoon before our May 21st meeting. Our speaker for April was Col (Ret) Billy Diehl. Col Diehl has been a Daedalian for more than 30 years and joined Flight 23 a couple of months ago. We are certainly pleased to have him on board. Billy earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Tampa and completed his master’s degree in Aeronautical Sciences from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He entered the United States Air Force in October 1970. During his military career, he was assigned to numerous operational, command and staff positions, and completed three overseas remote tours while flying for 28 years of his 30-year career. Billy is currently consulting as the President of Diehl TacAir Consulting after working for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics/Fort Worth, as the manager of Business Development for the USAF F-35 program. Career Highlights: Command Pilot Rating with 5,000 fighter hours in peacetime and at war during Vietnam and Desert Storm. Fighter time includes over 3,000 hours in the F-16 aircraft. Credited with a MiG kill as an F-4 WSO during Vietnam.

Jim Boyd and Bob Cooper have a short discussion prior to the April meeting

Business Development team for over 10 years. Col Diehl’s presentation described a most challenging close air support mission during Desert Storm. His flight of four F-16s was just coming off of the tanker when they learned that a group of eight Army Rangers, who were performing scouting duties on Iraqi Army units South of Baghdad, had been discovered and were surrounded by several hundred Iraqi soldiers. The Rangers had no communications except for a survival radio which they used to summon help on Guard channel. Of note is that the youngest and most inexperienced of the Rangers is the one who thought of using the survival radio. Col Diehl’s flight was able to come to their aid but the flight was armed with CBU-87 (not what we in the FAC community would consider to be an ideal weapon to drop in close proximity to our troops). Due to antiaircraft defenses, the F-16s were limited to an altitude of 10,000 feet and above making the situation even more difficult. The Rangers had no smoke or other aids to establish their position. Somehow, Col Diehl was able to establish the friendly location and delivered his ordnance. Numbers two and three were unable to establish the friendly position but number four finally located them and was able to drop. The ordnance arrived just as the Iraqis were

about to overrun the Ranger position. The Rangers were extracted by UH-60s the following day after a night of continuous air strikes. The mission was regarded as an excellent example of communication and teamwork – the junior man on the Ranger Team and the junior man in the F-16 flight both made contributions that enabled success. I hope to see all of you at the May meeting. Don’t forget to contact Harvey Stewart to make golf tournament reservations
