3
3D Touch extruder upgrade 5 Level the bed This is an essential step which must be completed before the procedure is attempted. The procedure will later reference the flat bed to ensure that the hot end is in the correct position. For exact procedure on how to do this, please refer to: www.bitsfrombytes.com > Support> Technical Resources > 3D Touch > Printer setup and operations manual > 6f. Check the print bed is level.

3D Touch extruder upgrade 6 Remove case Undo 8 button head side bolts
Disconnect touchscreen. Lift case off chassis.
Remove bed.
5
3D Touch extruder upgrade 7 Detach the loom at the carriage end Tag existing black loom terminals at the carriage end. - LCF: Lower cooling fans, from the 4 large lower cooling fans on the bottom of the carriage. - UCF: Upper cooling fans, from the two smaller fans at the front of the carriage. - HEAD: head loom, from the energy chain directly down to the first terminal on the PCB - E1: extruder loom, from the energy chain which splits into a motor connector and a hot end connector. - E2: (if present) same as E1, but for the next extruder 2. - The blue two-wire connector does not need tagging as it is easy to distinguish. This is a reed switch. Disconnect all looms at the back of the carriage.
Unhook HEAD, E1 (& E2 if present) looms from motor plate. Twist the energy chain to detach the chain from the extruder body end.
6
3D Touch extruder upgrade 8 Prepare the extruder motors Remove the motor plate from the extruder body by removing the bolts.
Pivot the plate to remove from the assembly.
Remove motor from old plate.
Select new motor plate (both 2 and 3 head motor plates have been provided to cater for both possibilities). Choose the motor plate which matches your final number of extruders.
7
3D Touch extruder upgrade Position motor plate over the motors. Note the orientation of the plate and the motor connectors. If motor for extruder 3 is present, this matches orientation of motor for extruder 2. Use M3 x 12 caps, with washers, to lightly fasten the motors to the plate. Motor position will be adjusted later so do not tighten fully.
Remove energy chain bridge
8
3D Touch extruder upgrade 9 Fit the new extruder barrel Remove and retain the 7 bolts indicated left.
Use a ball ended driver.
When removing the PCB, retain 2mm spacers underneath.
9
3D Touch extruder upgrade Remove the single underside bolt for each extruder.
Detach the fan loom from the extruder plate.
Ensure that the reed switch connector at the back does not snag on the extruder plate.
10
3D Touch extruder upgrade Lift the extruder plate off the carriage.
Position the new extruder over the extruder plate. Ensure that the lower PTFE tube fits snugly into the extruder plate.
Fasten the extruder bodyto the plate using ONLY the two holes indicated. Use M3 x 12 CAP bolts.
11
3D Touch extruder upgrade 10 Fitting the new hot end Prepare the hot end. Ensure that the PTFE tube sits flush with the top of the MDF (wooden) triangular part.
Offer the hot end up to the steel carriage plate, next to the existing hot-end.
Plastic rivets are used to fasten the hot-end connector to the steel plate. (closed)
(open)
12
3D Touch extruder upgrade Push connector up to the plate and insert the rivets. Ensure the connector is in the same orientation as the previous. i.e. connector pins face the same way. Position hot end so that the wires are outside and away from the hot-end stand-offs.
Loosely fasten the hot-end connector with M3 x 16 cap bolts. Do not torque up at this stage.
13
3D Touch extruder upgrade Refit the bed.
Manually wind the bed up until the new nozzle touches the bed.
Tighten the bolts on the new hot end evenly until the nozzles touch the bed evenly.
Check the nozzles touch the bed evenly.
14
3D Touch extruder upgrade 11 Re-fitting the extruder bodies Manually wind the bed down.
Position the extruder plate over the carriage, threading the blue 2-wire connector through the extruder plate hole as shown.
Position the blue 2wire lead as shown.
15
3D Touch extruder upgrade Refasten the extruder using M3 x 16 caps where shown.
Ensure that the 2mm spacers are used between the extruder plate and the PCB.
Using an M3 x 16 cap for each extruder body, fasten the third extruder body bolt from the underside of the assembly. Tip: A square ended driver is much easier to position the bolt here, than a ballended driver.
16
3D Touch extruder upgrade 12 Installing the extruder loom, PCB and delivery tube Take the single connector end of the loom, and fold it back on itself.
Pull out the energy chain so that it runs straight.
Insert connector into energy chain.
17
3D Touch extruder upgrade Push loom down energy chain. This can be difficult for a 3rd extruder, as the chain will already be quite full. In this case it may be quicker to insert a length of filament to pull the loom through with. Thread the loom under the second Y motor loom.
Thread the loom under the top rear bar.
18
3D Touch extruder upgrade Thread the loom behind the z-beam.
Thread the loom underneath the lower rear bar, and over the inner rear bar.
Prepare the extruder PCB module with the spacer and M3 x 10 cap. Remove the top bolt shown here in this photo.
19
3D Touch extruder upgrade Connect the loom to the extruder PCB.
Insert the PCB module into the next available slot at the back of the main board. You do not need to remove the electronics cover plate. Fasten the module in place using the M3 x 10 cap bolt.
Thread the delivery tube into the end of the energy chain. Insert the non-nut end first.
20
3D Touch extruder upgrade Thread down the back panel, following the previous delivery tube.
Insert the tube through the hole at the final clip.
Thread over the lower rear bar, and under the inner lower bar.
21
3D Touch extruder upgrade Ensure a 50mm stagger between the delivery tubes at the carriage end of the loom.
Clip the delivery tube in position.
Refasten the energy chain to the extruder body, running the looms out of the back of the bracket and the delivery tubes through the middle.
22
3D Touch extruder upgrade Ensure looms fit into the slot at the rear of the bracket.
Position delivery tubes as shown.
23
3D Touch extruder upgrade 13 Re-connecting the carriage Fasten the blue two wire lead (z-reed switch) to the PCB as shown.
(If available, fasten extruder #3 hot end connector) Fasten extruder #2 hot-end connector. Hot end connectors reside at the base of the extruders, as shown. Fasten extruder #1 hot-end connector. Ensure that the connectors are correct. i.e. E2 loom goes to E2 hot end, and E1 loom goes to E1 hot end. Fit UCF (upper cooling fan) loom to side clip of extruder plate.
24
3D Touch extruder upgrade Run theUCF loom under the rear x-bar as shown.
Connect UCF loom (as shown left).
Run the LCF (lower cooling fan) loom to follow the UCF loom, and connect as shown. Clip all fan looms into the loom clip next to the PCB to tidy once connected.
25
3D Touch extruder upgrade Connect the head loom into the position shown left.
Arrange the extruder looms so that the motor connectors point to the back of the machine, ready for the motor installation.
26
3D Touch extruder upgrade 14 Installing the extruder motors Fit the energy beam bridge.
Thread the looms through the side clip of the motor bracket.
27
3D Touch extruder upgrade Pivot the motor bracket onto the back of the extruders. Fit belt before lying the motor bracket flat.
Bolt the motor bracket down onto the extruders using M3 x 16 caps. You may need to loosen the extruder bolt underneath the carriage plate to get the bolts in. Tension the belt and lock the motors in position with the M3 x 12 caps.
