The Grade 4/5 Newsletter

Happy October to all of our students and families! Where did September go? I just wanted to remind you that our blog is up and running! You can find us at: [email protected]. I try to update the blog on a monthly basis. Visiting our blog gives you an insight into the fun we have learning together. The following are some of the things that we will be working on this month.

In October, we will be working on extending understanding through making meaningful connections and the character trait of resilience to read aloud stories. We have just begun this journey by learning about Malala and through Shannen and the Dream for a School. In writing, the focus will continue to be on the use of various graphic organizers to help organize our ideas before embarking on written responses. Our main homework assignment for the year involves both reading and writing. The students are asked to read for 20 mins. daily and then create a written response to what they have read over the week. These responses are due on Wednesdays (boys) and Thursdays (girls). A way that you can help support your child from home would be to read with them and point out certain grammar structures, word choices and punctuation.

In Mathematics, we will begin a Patterning Unit. By the end of the month, will also spend some time on Length including converting metres to centimetres and kilometres to metres.

In grade 5 Social Studies, we are continuing to learn about First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada. As the month ends, we will be shifting our focus from the First Nations to the arrival of the first Europeans. In grade 4 Social Studies, we have been learning about ancient civilizations. Our focus for this month will be on ancient Greece.

A special “thank-you” to all families who support our children and program! Checking your child’s agenda daily, sending nutritious lunches, making sure that your child is well rested, and sending your child to school with appropriate clothing help us tremendously in creating a wonderful learning environment for your child.

If you have any questions, please feel free to write to me in your child’s agenda book. I try to check them daily! Sincerely, Mrs. Platis
