Bullied by the devil By Paul Williams, Pastor WH First Baptist Church
In the past couple of years, we have seen an increase in the amount of stories about bullying. Students at school have been physically and emotionally tormented. Adults are being wrongly judged and stereotyped at an alarming rate. This increase has caused many to question our ability to withstand these attacks. It takes a great deal of emotion and strength to stand up to this kind of treatment. I wonder how we stand up to all the evil attacks that come our way by satan. We sometimes do not even realize the attacks. I have always heard about people who could withstand many struggles and come through it looking with a championed hero. Some of these stories come straight out of the Bible. There is a group of men mentioned in 2 Samuel 23, that I call Bible super heroes because
they stood up to the bullies of Philistines. Men like Josheb-Basshebeth who defeated 800 Philistine warriors. Shammah also stood alone after the Israelite army fled in fear. He defeated the whole Philistine army to save a field of lentils. My favorite was a man named, Benaiah. He struck down mighty warriors and even went into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. I call these men super heroes, however, they won many battles because they did not depend on their own strength, but the Lord. It says in this same passage in the Bible, that the Lord gave the victory too these men. I often wonder if I could ever fight like these men. I find myself in certain situations where I do not know where the strength will come from. Where do I turn when the attacks begin? What am I to do to protect my family? How do I endure constant trials and frustrations?
When all these questions and doubt begin to rise, then I remember the promises of God. I remember all of the Psalms that promise God’s presence, protection, and power. You see God has given us all we need to survive the attacks from evil bullies. How do you take a stand against the devil? I find the answer in the words of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians chapter 6. Paul was writing to followers of Jesus who were being pulled in some many different directions which caused confusion. He tells them in verses 10-18, there are things we need in order to take a stand. The problem I face is trying too hard to stand against satan on my own power. I try to find the best armor around to help me. I try to put on all the physical armor to go into battle. However, Paul says that is not what is needed. We find a list of spiritual disciplines. These disciplines will help us stand
against the bullies. Truth is something that holds all things together. Righteousness will guard our heart. We need a willingness to share the news of Jesus and how he conquered death and satan. Faith will help us persevere all the attacks. Salvation is the foundation for knowing we have the power of change. The Word of God can be used to defeat anything this world tries to use to persuade us away from God’s truth. We should not forget about prayer. Prayer is a tool to bring everything together. It is our battle cry to the Lord for help and guidance. So how do we stand against the bully of evil and darkness; we take a stand with Jesus Christ. develop strength We through using these disciplines. We are reminded of the victory we have in Christ. We take a stand!
