President’s Corner It’s a dull day if you don’t learn something new. Or maybe three things. During the Arkansas – Minnesota basketball game Saturday evening the announcers were interviewing the new Razorback football coach, Chad Morris. Coach Morris stated (1) that he started out as a high school basketball coach. That he (2) liked to recruit athletes that had played several sports in high school, and (3), the really big thought of the day, …….just a minute, think about a common thought related to recruiting: Arkansas is a relatively sparse state, with just under 3,000,000 people. There is no way we can compete with more populous states with their abundance of high quality athletes, most of who want to go to their state University’s. Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss. Bill Reid Missouri. They will always have the inside tract in recruiting. Coach Morris said when there are an abundance of great athletes; the local state university cannot recruit them all. He will go after them with this thought….(3), If you come to Arkansas you will be competing in the best division in the best conference in America. If you want to be the best and play against the best, Arkansas is the place for you. What a wonderful thought. Yes you can go to a good college with a good football program, but if you want to go to the very best, you want to go to the University of Arkansas.. This brings us to the Pine Bluff Kiwanis Club. We are a service organization. There are many groups and organizations that provide service to Pine Bluff. Most have greater resources, with large paid staffs. Kiwanis is all volunteer. But with your participation, there are no civic clubs that can provide greater service to our area. The goal is for every member of our Pine Bluff Kiwanis Club to give annually 100 hours of time in service to our community. Listed below are your fellow Kiwanians that have contributed their time and efforts to improve your community over the past two months. Bell Ringing The bell ringing season starts each November and runs through Christmas Eve, when the red kettles are packed away for the season. Volunteers are the difference between an empty kettle and one that raises about $30 per hour – enough to provide a family with two bags of groceries, or shelter an individual for a night. The Pine Bluff Kiwanis Club served two days this year. Over 12 members volunteered this year to man the kettles. Two members brought their children or young friends to experience this rewarding event.
Did you know? … Green Eggs & Ham has only 50 different words ... "I" is used 81 times & "not“ is used 82 times. It was written because a publisher bet Seuss he couldn't write a book with only 50 words!

If you do not know ask Bill Reid. We would like to remind you, giving respect to others around you please silence your cell phone when coming into the Kiwanis Meeting. We know that at times you may have to have your cell phone on vibrate for emergency's, but as we prepare to listen to our speaker, please be sure they are silenced during the program. After I drink coffee, I like to show my empty mug to the IT guy and to tell him that I have successfully installed Java. He hates me!

THIS CHRISTMAS Mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Write a love letter. Share some treasure. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Keep a promise. Find the time. Forgive an enemy. Listen. Apologize if you were wrong. Think first of someone else. Be kind and gentle. Laugh a little. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love. Speak it again. Speak it still once again. ~Anonymous Thank you for your service to our club and our community! Wishing you blessings of comfort and joy as you celebrate the Christmas season and the New Year with your loved ones.
As the crow flies … Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (MTA) recently found more than 200 dead crows near greater Boston, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts. However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paint appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues, it was determined that 98 percent of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2 percent were killed by an impact with a car. MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: When crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah,” not a single one could shout "Truck." Page 4
Support the wait staff … Periodically throughout the year, we have collected and set aside money to be presented during the holiday season to our hard-working and dedicated wait staff at the PBCC. Each week, they have the room set up for us and ready to go, and then move quietly throughout the room, serving our meals without interrupting conversations and/or committee meetings. While a very small gratuity amount is built into each week’s lunch fee, that amount is shared with all PBCC wait staff, and does not go entirely to those who serve us. To round out our collections to date, we will be placing envelopes on the table again this week. There is no obligation to give; however, we hope the holiday spirit will move you in that direction. What did the digital clock say to the grandfather clock? Look, grandpa! No hands!
