Rev. Dr. John Landis the current pastor at First Presbyterian Church, spoke at the regular Kiwanis meeting last week. Dr Landis is a great motivational speaker. He is in Pine Bluff to work with the First Presbyterian Church in their declining membership. The consulting he is providing the church can apply to many parts of Pine Bluff. We hope to have him com back to our club and help us increase our membership. He provided us with some great ideas and has agreed to attend our Membership Committee meeting.

Barbara Rhinehart

He told us that we need to provide prospective members with alternative meeting times and places. For example he liked the idea of the “UNDER 40” SATELLITE CLUB. Also provide service events in which the young children of members can participate. Dr. Landis also agreed to attend a Gang of Five meeting.

President’s Corner How do you teach old dogs new tricks? Everyone knows you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. That probably started with Aesop who was active about 550 BC. Well ask Cesar Millan. Cesar has a TV program, The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. Each episode, (over 162), Cesar takes a dog with a problem and helps the dog become “a good” dog. Cesar has numerous helpful hints, one of which is patience. It takes lots of patience when you are working with any dog, young or old. Puppies are full of energy and are ready to play. Older dogs have been there, done that, and would just as soon take a nap. So what must the trainer do? He has to convince the dog that what is taking place is in the dog’s best interest. Bill Reid My Sunday school class has been meeting for about 60 years. Many of the original founding members are still active. One of our active faithful members, (he had even severed several years as class president) recently stopped coming to class. His wife was very ill, and he stayed home to help provide for her care. She is much improved, but still needs a wheel chair to get around. I asked, “When are you coming back to Sunday School and Church?” His answer, “I just got out of the habit.” I am firmly convinced that you can change your behavior. If you want to. You can do almost anything if you want it bad enough. In Bruce Gamble’s book, Black Sheep One, a biography about Pappy Boyington, a Marine Pilot during WW II, and a Medal of Honor winner. Pappy overcame many obstacles. He grew up in a broken home, with an alcoholic father, during the 20’s in rough lumberjack towns of the northwest. During Naval flight training in Pensacola Florida, he consistently barely passed through flight school. In spite of all obstacles, he persevered. Because he wanted to be a Naval Aviator flying for the Marines. He became national hero. A TV program on NBC running from 1976 until 1978, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and staring Robert Conrad was based on the exploits of Pappy Boyington’s during WWII. So what’s the point. If you want to be involved in your community, and provide help and assistance to the youth and others in need, Kiwanis is the place for you. While our goal is to provide service to our community, one child at a time, we do have other activities. Kiwanis International has a number of service clubs for youth, Key Clubs for high school students, and Circle K Clubs for college students. Kiwanis also has Aktion Clubs, for adults with disabilities. We are in the process of starting an Aktion Club at Jenkins Center. Which brings us to YOU. If you want to participate, to be part of a great civic club with high goals, all you have to do is want to. You can have lots of energy or take a nap. It’s up to you.

Fishing After a morning fishing on the lake, a Kiwanian left for a District meeting in the afternoon and his wife decided to motor out into the lake, drop anchor and read her book. A Game Warden pulls up alongside the woman in his boat. "'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?" "Reading a book" she replies. "You're in a Restricted Fishing Area" he informs her. "I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing, I'm reading". "Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up." "If you do that, I'll have to charge you with Sexual assault" says the woman. "But I haven't even touched you," says the game warden. "That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment." "Have a nice day ma'am" the warden said, and he left.

Test Flight One year Father Christmas is forced to have an official from the Aviation Authority check his sleigh to make sure it’s airworthy. The official checks out the sleigh on the ground then sits beside Father Christmas for a test flight. Suddenly Father Christmas notices the official has a revolver in his pocket. ‘What’s that for?’ he asks. ‘You’re not a hijacker are you?’ ‘No,’ replies the official. ‘But we have to see how you handle this craft when you lose an engine on take-off.’

Try Before You Buy! Myra was going to the Christmas office party but needed a new party dress. In the clothing store she asked, 'May I try on that dress in the window, please?' 'Certainly not, madam,' responded the salesgirl, 'You'll have to use the fitting room like everyone else.'

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Avery. Avery who? Avery Merry Christmas to you! TIME … I THOUGHT … I thought that Time could never reconcile me to my loss. I thought that to the end of living it would be my cross; a heavy weight that I would have to carry to the last. But Time was kinder than I thought --grief died and sorrow passed. I thought I’d lost forever all my joy in lovely things; wood and gardens, waves and gardens, dawns and sunsets, leaves and wings. I never thought my heart would leap to greet a friend once more --- and listen to the welcome sound of footsteps at the door. Once again within the magic web of life I’m caught. Time indeed was kind to me, for Time its healing brought. Author: Patience Strong

Support the wait staff … Periodically throughout the year, we have collected and set aside money to be presented during the holiday season to our hard-working and dedicated wait staff at the PBCC. Each week, they have the room set up for us and ready to go, and then move quietly throughout the room, serving our meals without interrupting conversations and/or committee meetings. While a very small gratuity amount is built into each week’s lunch fee, that amount is shared with all PBCC wait staff, and does not go entirely to those who serve us. To round out our collections to date, we will be placing envelopes on the table again this week. There is no obligation to give; however, we hope the holiday spirit will move you in that direction. If you are a guest, we hope you’ll return to the next meeting as a member. Please take this newsletter with you so that you have information on our Club projects and goals. If you have any questions about our Club or Kiwanis, feel free to call on any member or visit the Kiwanis websites listed in this newsletter. Page 4

One beautiful December evening Huan Cho and his girlfriend Jung Lee were sitting by the side of the ocean. There was a romantic full moon, and Huan Cho said, "Hey baby, let's play Weeweechu. "Oh no, not now. Let’s just look at the moon", said Jung Lee. "Oh, c'mon baby, let's you and I play Weeweechu. I love you and it's the perfect time," Huan Cho Begged. "But I had rather just hold your hand and watch the moon.” "Please Jung Lee, just once... play Weeweechu with me." Jung Lee looked at Huan Chi and said, "OK, we'll play Weeweechu." Huan Cho grabbed his guitar and they both sang... "Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year."
