Blanco Takes Commanding Lead in District 25-AAA UIL Academic Meet One Act Play Contest to be Determined Saturday at Lago Vista
Blanco’s Computer Science Team of Moses Godinez, Breanna Collins, Colton Barrow, and Mark Kuebel swept first through fourth places at the District 25-AAA Academic Meet held Wednesday at Blanco High School.
The Blanco High School UIL Academic Team has an insurmountable 58-point lead over district rival Lago Vista going into the last contest of the District 25-AAA meet. BHS will win another district championship after the One Act Play contest this Saturday. The district meet, held Monday and Wednesday in Blanco, quickly became a two-school race with BHS and LVHS combining for nearly 1,000 points, 543—485. The next closest school was Ingram Tom Moore with 125 points. The math and computer science teams, coached by Jody Schwarzlose, swept three events. The computer applications team, coached by Bill Spurgin, also swept their contest. “We are very happy with our performance against our district competitors,” said three-event regional qualifier senior Colton Barrow. “Our district UIL meet was very fun, and we are already preparing to compete at regionals, and hopefully state,” said sophomore district computer science champion Mark Kuebel. A total of 22 students qualified for the regional meet at Texas State University on April 24—25. The BHS team has also won the regional championship the past two years. “I knew we’d be in for another tough year with Lago Vista,” said UIL Academic Director Dr. Russell Kirkscey. “Our students rose to the occasion. Thirteen of the individual
regional qualifiers were 9th—11th graders, so we’re looking forward to more competitive years in the future.” “I’m glad I pushed through to qualify for regionals in informative speaking,” said sophomore Adrian Lamphier. First place teams and individuals in 1st—3rd places qualified for the regional meet. Second place teams and individuals in 4th place will serve as regional alternates. Seven schools will participate in the district One Act Play competition on Saturday in Lago Vista beginning at 11:00 AM. “It should be a very tough competition,” said OAP director Amy Arlitt. “We can’t worry about the other shows—there is no defense in OAP. We just have to go out and do our best, and hope the judges like what they see.” District 25-AAA UIL Results Through 3/27/15 Blanco Lago Vista Ingram Florence Jarrell Comfort Gateway HS

Blanco ISD Goes to Austin
Blanco ISD Board President Matt Herden (left) and Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford (right) met with State Representative Jason Isaac on Wednesday to discuss current school issues facing the Texas Legislature.
(L to R) Aurora Miranda, Jenna Reed, Esperanza Guerrero, Joanne Fischer.
Eighth grade Blanco Middle School Ecology/Gardening students volunteered with Joanne Fischer, member of Friends of the Blanco State Park and a Master Naturalist, to remove invasive plants from the park. It is important to remove the invasive species because they crowd out native Texas wildflowers. The Ecology/Gardening class also made seed balls, using clay and native plant seeds, to spread out in the park. In this service learning activity, students learned which plants were native species and which one were invasive species, while helping to improve the habitat at the local state park.

Both the baseball and softball teams visit Florence tonight for District 25-AAA contests. Baseball The baseball team is 1—1 in league play, opening with a 6—5 extra inning loss to Gateway on Saturday, and bouncing back to beat Comfort 5—4 on Tuesday. “The Comfort game was a crucial win for us,” said head coach Bryan Wyatt. “We did not need to start district 0—2.” “The district this year is the strongest it’s been in many years, so every win is a big win for us.” Wyatt was careful to acknowledge respect for each team on the schedule. “Florence will be a scrappy team and a dangerous team playing at home. We just need to continue to do the little things in every game, and things will fall our way.” Softball The Lady Panthers enter tonight’s game with Florence with a record of 2—2 in district play, and in a three-way tie for third place. It also marks the beginning of round two in district play. Florence’s fortunes have fared better. The Buffaloes are 4—0 in the league, with strengths in both pitching and hitting. “We’re doing a good job of hitting the ball, but our defense is not where it needs to be at the moment,” said head coach Michael Seales. “The girls are working hard to improve their play.”
