Albany Junior School Newsletter - 10th June 2016 Dear Parent/Carer Congratulations – Congratulations to Mrs Laura Goffin on her appointment as Assistant Headteacher. This position sits below the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher in our structure but provides vital stability and support to our Senior Leadership Team. Mrs Goffin has worked tirelessly as an SLT member in my time here and this promotion recognises her hard work and the esteem we hold her in. She will start the role, officially, in September and I am sure she’ll be a great success! UNICEF Change for Change Our final total raised was £225.11. Thank you for your support. Healthy Living Week Healthy Living Week is due to take place week commencing 20th June. The week's timetable is now on the school website under PE and Healthy Living. Have a look at when your child's class are taking part in their activities. Letters have already been sent out, please return consent forms as soon as possible. Your child's class teacher must have the consent form in order to take your child to Tesco. St Trizah’s Assembly On Thursday the 30th June at 9am, Miss Richards invites you all to an assembly to see how St Trizah’s school and the pupils have progressed with support from Albany Junior School. Gardening Club On Tuesday afternoon the Gardening Club visited Dig-In, the community allotments, on Pasture Road with Mrs Jelley and Mrs Ellis. They were very busy digging and preparing new beds together by planting out lettuce seedlings and sowing carrot, parsnip, onion and beetroot seeds. They also got to taste a new lettuce variety which Dig-In are trialling and some young sweet baby carrots. To end the afternoon they did a little pond dipping and found some Dragonfly larvae, Tadpoles, Water Boatmen and many other pond insects. It was a lovely afternoon in the sunshine, which was made more enjoyable by the impeccable manners of the children in the Gardening Club. Get Active Challenge Your child has a letter detailing a challenge for them to get involved with. The challenge is to complete 30 minutes of physical exercise per day from 1 st – 30th June. Thanks Miss Richards Year 3 Roald Dahl Week This year Roald Dahl would have been 100 years old! Therefore, year 3 will be holding a Roald Dahl week to celebrate his life. During our Topic this term, we have read and studied Charlie and the Chocolate factory and the children have loved it and so as part of our Roald Dahl week we shall be looking at his other work. We will be watching various Roald Dahl books transformed into film (The BFG, Fantastic Mr Fox and Matilda). This will allow the children to discuss the differences and how his story writing was inspirational enough to be developed into film. We will be taking part in Roald Dahl inspired dance workshops based around Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We will have illustration workshops based around Quentin Blake’s work with Roald Dahl and there will also be a celebratory birthday picnic with lots of cake! The children will be allowed to dress as their favourite Roald Dahl character for £1 donation to help with paying for the picnic. The children are all VERY excited about the week as are Mrs G and Miss Richards. Roald Dahl week will be week beginning 11th July. The films mentioned above are PG certificate so if you would like to opt your child out of the viewing please see the office and they will create a list. This will be a fun filled week of Roald Dahl activities and we hope you can support us in delivering this. Stay & Read Albany Junior School would like to invite parents to ‘stay and read’ with their child on 8th July and 15th July at 9-9.20am. You are welcome to come and sit and enjoy a book with your child. You will need to be signed in at 9am any questions please contact the office. We look forward to seeing you there. Mrs Goffin Book Drive For one day only Albany Juniors are holding a book drive on Friday 1 st July. We would like you to search your book shelves and empty your cupboards of any children’s books that are in good condition that you no longer read or want. We will then be using them to fill the shelves in our library. On Friday the 1 st of July please leave any donated books in the school hall with Mrs Goffin and Miss Weatherall between 8.30am and 9am. We will then sort and colour band the books ready for September. Any books that aren’t suitable for our school library will be donated to charity. Thanks in advance Mrs Goffin
