Unit 1: All About God

Devotion: The Bible clearly states that there is one true God and He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We call this the triune (three part) nature of God or the Trinity. In the story of Jesus’ baptism, we can read about all three persons of the Trinity interacting with each other. Jesus is baptized by John and as He comes out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends on Him as a dove. Then God the Father speaks from the heavens, saying “This is my beloved son, whom I love. In him I am well-pleased.” There is only one true God. And that one true God exists in three persons. God is one and He is three at the same time. How can that be? Truthfully, it is a great and beautiful mystery about God that we will never fully comprehend. We know it is true because in His Word, God says it’s true! We can even look to some examples in this world that help us to understand, even if just a little, what three-in-one might be like. However, God is larger and more awesome than our wildest imaginations. Isn’t that amazing? God is beyond our understanding, yet He is the same God who loves us and cares for us, and wants to be our king, savior, and friend.

Crafts/Activities: There are many different object lesson ideas on the Trinity depending on the season of the year. Many of these object lessons are different ways of thinking about the Trinity. However, they are limited by the physical world. When teaching kids about the Trinity, remind them that these examples are only slightly similar to what the triune nature of God is really like, and celebrate the wonder of a God who is larger and more mysterious than our minds can fully understand. • Shamrock: Three leaves, three Persons • Apple: Core (Father), flesh (Son), skin (Spirit) • Water Stages: Solid, liquid, gas states • Snowman: Three parts, one snowman
