Bible Reading: • Matthew 28:19 - In this passage where Christ communicates the Great Commission, God is described as three persons. The Trinity is important to acknowledge and understand as best we can, because we want to worship God in His true character and nature.
Discussion Questions: • What or who do you think God the Father is like? What does He do for us, His children? • Who is God the Son? What is He like? • What is the Holy Spirit like? 80

Unit 1: All About God
• Why do you think God is three persons? • Are any of the persons of God more important than the others? • How does knowing the triune nature of God make us want to worship Him more?
Note to Parents: Why is teaching the Trinity important? It is important because the Bible reveals this Trinitarian nature as a fundamental truth of who God is. While it’s important to acknowledge that we may not ever understand the fullness of God, learning more about Him is an act of worship! The Trinity is important because it relates the different characteristics and purposes of God, such as the just and holy Father, the perfect life and saving act of Christ, and the working of the Holy Spirit in the hearts and minds of men. However, all three persons are fully God and do not amount merely to parts of a whole. They are coeternal and coequal persons of God. The Trinity is also important because it highlights one of the major values of God: relationship. God has full and complete relationship in Himself, we can have relationship with Him and with each other as part of the body of Christ. Devotion: In our last lesson, we learned that God exists in three persons: God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today we’ll dig a little deeper to learn more about who these three person are. The more we learn about who God is and what He is like, the more we love and worship Him. Through relationship with God and study of the Bible, we will spend our lives getting to know our Father, our Savior, and the Holy Spirit. God the Father. God the Father created all things in a mighty act of love. He created people in His own image for the purpose of relationship with them and that they would bring Him glory. God loves us and desires us to be His obedient children. Jesus often talked with and prayed to His Father and called Him Abba. This is an example to us. Pray to God the Father now and praise Him for His creation! God the Son -- Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only Son of God. He was sent to live a perfect life, showing us how to live in perfect relationship with God the Father and with others. He also lived 81

a perfect life so that He could be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus died so that our sins would be forgiven, and He was raised to life so that we would have victory over sin and death. God the Holy Spirit -- Our Helper. The Holy Spirit was sent by God to be our counselor and friend. We receive the Holy Spirit in our hearts when we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and choose to follow Him. The Holy Spirit helps us in many ways, including understanding God’s Word in the Bible and helping us to follow the ways of Jesus.
Crafts/Activities: • Shield of the Trinity: The shield of the Trinity is a useful way to communicate the triune nature of God. Use the image from the scripture poster in this lesson as a reference to help your kids make their own Trinity shield. Use strips and circles of construction paper for the lines and dots. Decorate them and write the appropriate text on each piece. Help your children go through describing the Trinity by tracing the shape. (“God is the Father, God is the Son, and God is the Holy Spirit. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father.”) You may also want to revisit the Trinity object lessons from the last lesson, “In How Many Persons Does This One God Exist?”

Unit 1: All About God
Who are the three persons of God? The three persons of God are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit! In Matthew 28:18, Jesus says to go out and make disciples of every nation. He says to do this in the name of God. However, here he describes God in terms of the three persons of God: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The shield of the Trinity is a useful way to describe God. God is the Father, the Son AND the Holy Spirit. When you invoke the name of God you mean all three of the persons of God. When you invoke the name of one of the persons, you mean the triune God as well. However, the persons of God are also distinct: The Father is NOT the Son, and the son is NOT the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is NOT the Father. Confused? We can barely wrap our minds around a representation like the Trinity shield. Catching a glimpse of the mysterious triune nature of God is all we can hope for this side of heaven.
