Australian Lutheran World Service Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) is: ♦ the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia. ♦ guided and motivated in its work by the example and commands of Jesus Christ that are expressed in the Gospel message. ♦ committed to use the generous donations given by Lutheran an communities in Australian and New Zealand to help the very poor and disadvantaged in overseas countries, to support refugees in Australia and, to raise awareness about global human poverty and injustice. ♦ a partner organisation to the Lutheran World Federation’s Fe Department for World Service, which implements emergency relief, refugee and development programs in thirtythirty six countries around the world. ♦ over 50 years old. Among others, ALWS aims to: ♦ address the root causes of human poverty and injustice. inju ♦ provide an integrated approach to development assistance so that the holistic needs of people are addressed. ♦ address the specific needs and human rights of vulnerable groups (e.g. women, girl children, disabled, landless, unemployed etc.). ♦ assist sist in leadership building to enhance the capacity of communities to better manage their essential services. ♦ provide for refugees and internally displaced peoples. ♦ respond to the urgent needs of people affected by disasters, either human-made made or natural. natu
ALWS employs a small number of staff in four states of Australia so that overheads are kept to a minimum. ALWS operates from Albury in NSW. ALWS is funded by generous donations from Australian and New Zealand Lutherans and also receives funding from the Australian Government’s AusAid program. ALWS works through a network of Lutheran Churches, churches agencies, and in cooperation with other churches— churches last year helping over 200 000 people. A large component of ALWS work is long-term, term, sustainable community development programs, which often start from an emergency response or refugee situation. All programs are systematically planned, regularly monitored and thoroughly evaluated. ALWS supports development programs in: ♦ Papua New Guinea ♦ Indonesia ♦ Sudan ♦ Cambodia ♦ Mozambique ♦ Nepal and ♦ Burundi AND refugee support in: ♦ Kenya and ♦ Nepal
The work of ALWS in Sudan 2009-2011 South Sudan Where: Twic East & Duk Counties, Jonglei State; Yirol West & Yirol East, Lakes State; Ikotos County, Eastern Equatoria State What: Reintegration and Rehabilitation Program Who: Returning refugees, internally displaced & host communities (numbers unclear as situation is fluid) Sustainable health services • Increased access to safe water through: drilling boreholes; training of water committees to manage the water sources; support the county water department to establish a borehole maintenance system, including training for water department staff • Promotion of hygiene awareness in schools and communities, supported by: education materials; provision of tools to encourage households to build family latrines; assist community production of hundreds of latrine slabs; construction of latrines in schools; provision of washing facilities at schools Sustainable education services for children and adults • Training to Parent & Teacher Associations about their responsibilities, especially under the Convention on the Rights of the Child • Refresher training for teachers on teaching methodology • Upgrade of facilities in schools • Provision of classroom furniture sets in schools • Assist schools develop extra-curricular activity plans • Prepare a functional adult literacy class • Distribution of soap in schools (again, complementing water & sanitation activities listed above) • Provision of sanitary kits to girls Peace and Conflict Training and Resourcing • Local Peace Committees established and equipped to defuse potential conflict situations &/or mediate peaceful resolution of conflicts • Local authorities, including police, trained in conflict resolution strategies and using them. Supporting the Resettlement of Returning Refugees • Primarily achieved through collaboration with government authorities & other NGOs, as well as a complementary ACT Appeal activities • Provision of soap to up to 4000 families (to promote hygiene & integrated to the water & sanitation activities listed above) • Provision of non-food items to desperate refugee families – blankets, sleeping mats, cooking pots, spoons, cups, plates, underwear ALWS also support Sudan in the Darfur Region where there is still terrible fighting. This support is provided through Action by Churches Together. ALWS offer much support to the Sudanese who have fled to Kenya and to the Kukuma refugee camp (run by Lutheran World Federation and the United Nations). During 2008-09 over 50 000 refugees will return home to Sudan from the Kukuma Refugee Camp. The United Nations are currently in talks with the Lutheran World Federation to move some refugees from Somalia to the Kukuma refugee camp so the facilities can continue to be utilized.
