Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) is: ♦ the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia. ♦ guided and motivated in its work by the example and commands of Jesus Christ that are expressed in the Gospel message. ♦ committed to use the generous donations given by Lutheran communities in Australian and New Zealand to help the very poor and disadvantaged in overseas countries, to support refugees in Australia and, to raise awareness about global human poverty and injustice. ♦ a partner organisation to the Lutheran World Federation’s Department for World Service, which implements emergency relief, refugee and development programs in thirty-six countries around the world. ♦ over 50 years old. It started as a ministry that provided resettlement services to the hundreds of non-British refugees and migrants arriving in Australia after the end of WWII at a government-run migrant centre located at Bonegilla near Albury in New South Wales. Among others, ALWS aims to: ♦ address the root causes of human poverty and injustice. ♦ provide an integrated approach to development assistance so that the holistic needs of people are addressed. ♦ address the specific needs and human rights of vulnerable groups ALWS employs a small number (eg. women, girl children, disabled, landless, unemployed etc.). of staff in five states of ♦ assist in leadership building to enhance the capacity of communities Australia so that overheads to better manage their essential services. are kept to a minimum. ♦ provide for refugees and internally displaced peoples. ALWS operates from Albury ♦ respond to the urgent needs of ALWS supports development in NSW. people affected by disasters, programs in: either human-made or natural.
95% of all money raised by Lutheran Schools this year goes directly to program development in Papua New Guinea.
