Coaching 3rd Base/Base Running-Jerrod Ryherd SM East Head Baseball Coach brryherd@smsd 1) 3rd Base Coaches Job -Run the offense -Give signs -Make sure players know signs -KNOW YOUR LINEUP!!! 2) Importance of Base Running -.300 is a good hitter--Can not afford miscue on bases and beat a good pitcher -AND CAN NOT MAKE ERROR AS A 3rd base coach against a good team. -Base Running is skill that has to be taught 3) Giving Signs -Keep it simple -Go over in practice and pre-game -Make sure batter not in box and runner is on base -Be in good view of your players -When to give signs 4) Running an Offense -What style do you want to play? -What personal do you have? -What does opponent have? Pitcher and catcher in particular. 5) Runner at 3rd Base -See it through -Past the pitcher -Down Angle 6) Lead Runner 2nd Base -Watch the 2nd baseman and SS -Keep terminology the same-OK, Stay, More -Get a good angle 7) Multiple Base Runners -Make your call on lead runner and get back to get in view of following runner -Don’t be indecisive -Read the play don’t get in a hurry 8) Base Running Drills 1) 4 deep at 1 base — work on break 2) Divide up equally at 4 bases - Great for reps - after it has been taught 3) Live - No substitute for it - Put runner on base when scrimmaging - have a coach at 3rd.
