LAST TIME OUT
The Cal women’s soccer team fought to its third consecutive conference win on Saturday, topping Washington State, 2-0, on a bright and clear afternoon at Goldman Field. Ready from the opening whistle, the Golden Bears scored on their first shot of the game as Nild finished a look from inside the box in just the sixth minute. Cal doubled its lead in the 72nd minute with Fong’s first career goal off an assist from sophomore Maggie Bell. Bell played a ball in from the left wing that found Fong with time to turn in the middle of the box. Fong pulled the goalkeeper off her line and buried the ball into the back of the net.
BOYD IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Cal senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd has 33 shutouts this season, already the most by any player in Cal women’s soccer history and tied for the fourth-most in conference history. Boyd’s 34 career shutouts also rank fourth among all active players in Division I soccer. Most Career Shutouts Pac-12 Women’s Soccer History Katelyn Rowland (UCLA) 55 Valerie Henderson (UCLA) 38 Jane Campbell (Stanford) 35 Emily Boyd (Cal) 34 Nicole Barnhart (Stanford) 34 Elise Edwards (Stanford) 34 An NSCAA Third-Team All-District selection in 2016 and two-time Second-Team All-Pac-12 honoree, Boyd currently ranks second in the conference in goals against average (0.42 GAA) and shutouts (8), and third in save percentage.
SHARING THE WEALTH
After graduating the top two scorers from the 2016 season in Arielle Ship and Ify Onumonu, who scored 21 of Cal’s 37 goals (57%) in 2016, the Golden Bears have found offense from all over the field this year. Entering the weekend, Cal has scored 21 goals on the year, coming from 11 different players. In Pac-12 play, Cal’s seven goals have come from six different players. In total, 14 different players have registered at least one point for Cal this season.
YOUTH IS SERVED
Cal’s 11-member freshman class – ranked No. 3 in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer – has acclimated well to the college game, with eight rookies seeing significant action this season. Center back Emily Smith is currently third overall on the team in minutes played and has started every game this season. Smith was ranked #3 in the TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Top 100 that was release this week. Three other Bears made the list: Luca Deza (#22), Emma Westin (#61), and Daisy Cleverley (#82). Rookie Caroline Clark has also earned multiple starts for the Bears this season. So far this season, six of Cal’s seven goals in conference play have been scored by underclassmen: Abi Kim (Sophomore) 2 goals Luca Deza (Freshman) 1 goal Kayla Fong (Sophomore) 1 goal Kailee Gifford (Freshman) 1 goal Anja Koehler (RS Sophomore) 1 goal Kim, a sophomore, leads Cal in scoring with six goals this season while Deza and Clark are tied for the team lead in assists, with three a piece.
Over the last several years, Boyd has furthered her game by placing on emphasis on her fitness and diet. The senior from Seattle shares her wellness journey on her Instagram account, @EBoydsFood, which has over 1,700 followers.
EARLY STARTS, LATE FINISHES
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
However, during Pac-12 play the Bears have found their way onto the scoreboard earlier. Four of Cal’s seven goals in conference play have been scored in the first half, including three goals in the 30th minute or earlier. Prior to starting conference play, Cal had scored just one in the first 30 minutes of a match, Abi Kim’s season-opening strike in the 19th minute against UC Irvine.
Cal’s defense has registered eight shutouts this season, including six in the last eightgames. The Golden Bears have conceeded a total of six goals this season, the second-fewest by any team in the Pac-12 and tied for seventh in all of Division I. Cal is the only Pac-12 team that has not allowed multiple goals in any game this season and one of only four teams in the nation to do so (Butler, Milwaukee, and Pepperdine).
Cal had a flair for the dramatic during the non-conference campaign, scoring seven of its 14 goals in the 69th minute or later, including six goals at or after the 80 minute-mark.

BOURIELLE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
The fifth season of the National Women’s Soccer League came to a close last Saturday, with the Portland Thorns beating the North Carolina Courage, 1-0, in the championship match.
