The most recent clash between the California and Santa Clara women’s soccer teams saw the Golden Bears pull out a dramatic 2-1 victory at home in the opening weekend of the 2017 season. The Bay Area rivals will meet again on Saturday with a spot in the Second Round of NCAA Tournament on the line. The Bears (13-5-1, 6-4-1 Pac-12) will host the Broncos (13-6-1, 8-1-0 WCC) at Edwards Stadium at 1:30 p.m. PT in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Saturday’s match will be the sixth meeting all-time between the Bears and Broncos in the NCAA Tournament and the latest installment in a rivalry that dates back to 1982. Cal leads the overall series between the schools 21-17-7, including a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Broncos on August 20, in which Cal scored twice in the final 10 minutes for the come-from-behind victory. Sophomore striker Abi Kim tallied the equalizer in the 80th minute and redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to secure the win for Cal. Santa Clara has had the upper hand in the postseason, holding a 3-1-1 advantage over the Bears in the NCAA Tournament. The Bay Area rivals last met in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, a 2-1 win for the Broncos at Buck Shaw Stadium behind a goal from Sofia Huerta in the 70th minute. This will be just the second time the teams have met in Berkeley in the NCAA Tournament and the first since 2000. The Golden Bears have made the tournament every year since 2004 and will be hosting a first round match up for the third time in the last four seasons. The Golden Bears hosted LMU in the First Round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament and also played their opening game at home in 2014, beating San Diego State, 3-2, in double overtime to advance to the Second Round. Cal played its First Round match on the road last season, playing Pepperdine to a 1-1 draw in double overtime. The Waves advanced to the second round on penalties, 3-2.

The Bears opened the 2017 season with a home win, thanks to a brace by sophomore striker Abi Kim. The season-opening win marked the 125th victory at Cal for head coach Neil McGuire, the most by any head coach in Cal women’s soccer history.
Late heroics pushed Cal past Bay Area rival Santa Clara, as the Golden Bears scored twice in the final 10 minutes. Abi Kim tallied her third goal of the weekend to equalize in the 80th minute and senior Kelly Fitzgerald converted a penalty in the 89th minute to secure the come-from-behind victory.

One hundred and ten minutes was not enough to determine a winner at Edwards Stadium, as California and Arizona State played to a 1-1 draw in double-overtime. Abi Kim put the Golden Bears ahead in the 48th minute, with her fifth goal of the season, but the visiting Sun Devils equalized in the 70th minute, snapping Cal’s 409 minute shutout streak.
