After wrapping up another successful regular season campaign at home, t¬¬he Cal women’s soccer team heads down the California coast for a pair of pivotal Pac-12 road games. The Golden Bears (13-2-1, 6-1-1 Pac-12), ranked 16th in the nation, will take on fifth-ranked USC (13-1-1, 7-0-1 Pac-12) on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. before heading across town for a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday against sixth-ranked UCLA (13-1-2, 6-1-1 Pac-12). Cal enters the weekend tied with the Bruins for third in the Pac-12 table and are three points back of the second-place Trojans. UCLA will take on league-leading Stanford on Thursday before Sunday’s match against the Bears. Cal is 2-0 against Top 25 opponents this season, with wins over No. 24 Santa Clara and No. 14 Oklahoma State. Cal has also had success away from home this season, winning five straight on the road, the longest active road winning streak by any Pac-12 team. The Golden Bears went unbeaten on last season’s trip to Los Angeles, playing No. 10 UCLA to a 1-1 draw in double-overtime and beating the then-seventh ranked Trojans, 1-0, behind Abi Kim’s game winner. Cal heads into the weekend on a five-match winning streak, with all five wins coming via shutout. Ranked second in the Pac-12 and sixth nationally with a 0.37 goals against average, the Golden Bears have posted 10 shutouts on the season, including eight in the last ten games. Senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd took sole possession of third on the Pac-12 career shutout list with 36 clean sheets and enters Thursday’s match with a shutout streak of 466 minutes, six minutes shy of setting a new her career best. Offensively, Cal erupted for three goals the last time out, all coming in the span of 11 minutes during Cal’s 3-0 win over Oregon on Senior Day. Kim opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the year, followed by goals from Miranda Nild and Mia Corbin soon thereafter.

Cal’s offense errupted for three goals in Sunday’s win over Oregon, all of which game in the second half. The three goals, which came from three different scorers in a span of 11 minutes, tied Cal’s single-game hight this season and marked the Bear’s most goals in a conference game since a 4-1 win over Washington on September 29, 2016. Cal is one of only four teams in all of Division I soccer that has held its opponents to one goal or fewer in every game this season. Butler, Pepperdine, and Milwaukee are the other teams to do so. The Golden Bears 26-3-4 over the last two seasons when holding their opponents to 1 goal or fewer, compared to 0-4-0 when allowing multiple goals.

The Golden Bears have posted a shutout each of their last five games, the team’s longest shutout streak since 2005 and two shy of matching the program record of seven clean sheets in a row, set during the 1984 season. Cal and senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd enter Thursday’s match not having allowed a goal in their last 465:46 minutes of play, the second-longest shutout streak of Boyd’s career. During the 2015 season, Boyd and the Bears’ backline held opponents scoreless for 471:28 minutes during non-conference play.

WE ARE CALIFORNIA When referring to any California athletic team, please use either “California” or “Cal” to denote the institution and “Golden Bears” or “Bears” when indicating the mascot. Refrain from using names such as UC Berkeley, California-Berkeley, Cal-Berkeley, or Cal State Berkeley.

The defending NCAA Champions, USC enters the weekend on a seven-game win streak, coming off a 2-1 victory over Washington State on Sunday in Pullman. Sophomore Ashleigh Plumptre scored the game winner in the 41st minute as the Trojans remained unbeaten in conference play. USC’s lone loss of the season came on September 3, falling 2-1 at Kansas. Since then, the Trojans are unbeaten in their last 12 matches (11-0-1) and boast a perfect 7-0-0 record at home on the year. USC ranks third in the conference in scoring, averaging just under two goals per game (1.93 goals per game), and ranks second in total shots. Redshirt senior Alex Anthony leads the Trojans in scoring with seven goals this season followed by junior forward Leah Pruitt with five goals. Tara McKeown and Savannah DeMelo are tied for the team lead with five assists apiece while redshirt freshman Kaylie Collins has seen the majority of minutes in goal, posting six shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average. The Trojans lead the all-time series with Cal, 11-9-2, though the Bears have just one loss in the last six meetings between the teams and have won their last three games at McAlister Field. Cal prevailed in last season’s matchup as Abi Kim scored the game’s only goal in the 86th minute off a feed from classmate Mia Corbin. Emily Boyd made eight saves in the win, as the Golden Bears snapped the Trojans’ 10-game winning streak.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS

Ranked in as high as No. 1 in the nation, UCLA split both matches last weekend, falling 1-0 at Washington State before responding with a 3-0 win over Washington. Thursday’s loss to the Cougars was the Bruins’ first of the season, snapping a 14-game unbeaten streak. The Bruins are 6-0-1 at home this season and will host top-ranked Stanford at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before Sunday’s match against the Bears. One of the most potent offenses in the nation, UCLA is averaging 2.56 goals per game on the season, led by 13 goals from junior Hailie Mace, the Pac-12’s leading scorer. Freshman Ashley Sanchez ranks second in the conference with eight assists while Canadian international Jessie Fleming has seven assists on the season and tallied the game-winning goal in Sunday’s win over the Huskies.

LAST TIME OUT

The Cal women’s soccer team fought to its third consecutive conference win on Saturday, topping Washington State, 2-0, on a bright and clear afternoon at Goldman Field. Ready from the opening whistle, the Golden Bears scored on their first shot of the game as Nild finished a look from inside the box in just the sixth minute. Cal doubled its lead in the 72nd minute with Fong’s first career goal off an assist from sophomore Maggie Bell. Bell played a ball in from the left wing that found Fong with time to turn in the middle of the box. Fong pulled the goalkeeper off her line and buried the ball into the back of the net.

BOYD IN THE RECORD BOOKS

Cal senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd has 36 shutouts this season, already the most by any player in Cal women’s soccer history and the third-most in conference history. Boyd’s 36 career shutouts also rank fourth among all active players in Division I soccer. Boyd’s 10 shutouts are one shy of matching the program single-season record, which Boyd has done each of her previous two seasons, posting 11 shutouts in both 2015 and 2016. Over the last several years, Boyd has furthered her game by placing on emphasis on her fitness and diet. DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE

Cal’s defense has registered ten shutouts this season, including eight in the last ten games. The Golden Bears have conceeded a total of six goals this season, the second-fewest by any team in the Pac-12 and tied for sixth in all of Division I. Cal is the only Pac-12 team that has not allowed multiple goals in any game this season and one of only four teams in the nation to do so (Butler, Milwaukee, and Pepperdine).

SHARING THE WEALTH

After graduating the top two scorers from the 2016 season in Arielle Ship and Ify Onumonu, who scored 21 of Cal’s 37 goals (57%) in 2016, the Golden Bears have found offense from all over the field this year. Entering the weekend, Cal has scored 25 goals on the year, coming from 12 different players. In Pac-12 play, Cal’s 11 goals have come from eight different players. In total, 15 different players have registered at least one point for Cal this season.

YOUTH IS SERVED

Cal’s 11-member freshman class – ranked No. 3 in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer – has acclimated well to the college game, with eight rookies seeing significant action this season. Center back Emily Smith is currently third overall on the team in minutes played and has started every game this season. Smith was ranked #3 in the TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Top 100 that was release this week. Three other Bears made the list: Luca Deza (#22), Emma Westin (#61), and Daisy Cleverley (#82). Rookie Caroline Clark has also earned multiple starts for the Bears this season. WEEK 11: CAL at USC & UCLA

EARLY STARTS, LATE FINISHES

Cal had a flair for the dramatic during the non-conference campaign, scoring seven of its 14 goals in the 69th minute or later, including six goals at or after the 80 minute-mark. However, during Pac-12 play the Bears have found their way onto the scoreboard earlier. Four of Cal’s 11 goals in conference play have been scored in the first half, including three goals in the 30th minute or earlier. Prior to starting conference play, Cal had scored just once in the first 30 minutes of a match, Abi Kim’s season-opening strike in the 19th minute against UC Irvine.

BEARS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS

The Golden Bears were recognized for its continued success in the classroom, earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive season, the organization announced recently. To qualify for the Team Academic Award, teams must have had a composite grade point average of 3.0 or higher for all players on the roster for the 2016-17 academic year. This is Cal’s 13th time overall winning the award, and the eighth instance under head coach Neil McGuire.

McGUIRE SETS RECORD

The Golden Bears’ victory over UC Irvine was one for the record books for head coach Neil McGuire, who became the all-time wins leader in Cal women’s soccer history with 125 victories. Now in his 11th season in Berkeley, McGuire has an overall record of 137-64-26 at Cal, good for a 0.661 career winning percentage. McGuire has led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Tournament every year of his tenure, which began in 2007.

BOURIELLE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

The fifth season of the National Women’s Soccer League came to a close last Saturday, with the Portland Thorns beating the North Carolina Courage, 1-0, in the championship match. Former Golden Bear Celeste Bourielle was a member of the Thorns championship side, appearing in 17 matches and making 13 starts. Bourielle was one of six former Cal players in NWSL this season, joined by Taylor Comeau (Chicago Red Stars), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Ideoma Onumonu (Boston Breakers), Arielle Ship (Washington Spirit), and Sam Witteman (North Carolina Courage). The Red Stars, Courage, Thorns, and Pride all reached the postseason in 2017, making Cal and North Carolina the only schools with players on all four playoff sides.

No. 1 IN THE CLASSROOM

Generally considered the top-ranked public university in the world, Cal has held the No. 1 spot among the U.S. News & World Report rankings of public national universities for 18 consecutive years. In its Best Global Universities ratings, U.S. News places Cal fourth overall behind Harvard, MIT and Stanford
