Berewood Bulletin Head teacher up-date Dear Parents and Carers I write in our first newsletter of the summer term as we look forward to many exciting trips, visits and new learning, as well as some very busy days with end of key stage assessments, phonics checks and annual reports. This term we will begin to welcome our next reception class children and parents into Berewood, with our first informal open evening next week. I will also be working with the Governors to plan our class structure for next year and appoint new staff to enable our continued growth. I look forward to sharing these developments with you over the second half of the term. I have been watching the increase in after school clubs and our increasing involvement in inter school events lately, and was delighted to hear that a team of year 5 and 6 boys won one of the local football leagues. You will see a picture in this Bulletin of some of the team with their medals. Well done to them! Last term our key stage 2 classes were lucky enough to work with some art students from the University of Chichester , and I will also share some photographs of their work as they studied colour and learnt of Henri Matisse and Jackson Pollack. I look forward to enjoying this summer term with you and hope you all enjoy a happy, if a little colder than expected, long bank holiday weekend! Yours sincerely

Mrs Sue Patrick Head teacher

Football league champions! Over the spring term children from Year 4, 5 and 6 took part in a football league organised by the Havant Academy Sports Partnership. I am very grateful to Miss Barnes and the office staff for helping to make these matches possible, and a huge well done to the successful league winners! Good luck to the girls who are now taking part in their own league matches!

“We had a great time and enjoyed playing with the other teams. I was proud to be playing for our school.” Football team members

Topic Books, Curriculum Letters and Annual Reports I hope you enjoyed sharing your child’s topic book at the start of this term, and that the curriculum letter has given you a useful insight to the work your children will be doing. This term we have not set aside any days as formal parent meeting days, but we remind you that you are always welcome to ask for a meeting at any stage. Annual reports will be sent home towards the end of the term, and will include the results of any statutory test you child may have taken part in this summer. 2

Year 3 and 4 perform at Crookhorn College Children from year 3 and 4 joined other children from local schools to present a performance to their parents before showing all their parents here an extended version. We were pleased to take part and proud of our children’s dramatic version of our current decade– spot the 2012 Olympics!

Junior Road Safety Officers update You may be aware that our Junior Road Safety Officers and their team introduced a competition to all children, inviting them to make a bookmark which reminded children of some of the key points for road safety. Last week they announced the winners whilst again highlighting to the children the importance of wearing bright colours and helmets when on their bicycles, and of being safe when on the roads. I am hoping that they will be able to join me at the front gate shortly, so that they can spot children crossing the road or using bikes and scooters safely on the roads around us.

Columbus Class evacuated to Stansted House! To give their World War 2 topic an exciting start Miss Barnes, Mrs Nelson, Mrs Patrick and Columbus Class caught the train and travelled to Stansted House where they learnt about evacuees and a group of children who were sent there from Portsmouth during the war. The children and staff dressed up for the event and came home buzzing with stories of life below stairs, and of escaping from the maze!
