Berewood Bulletin Head teacher up-date Dear Parents and Carers Here we are rushing through October and about to have our half term break. I do hope that you and your child / children have enjoyed the start of the autumn term, and if you were new to our school, your child has settled happily into school. I hear from the Reception class parent meetings held over the past two weeks, that the children are taking steps forward with their learning and that they are all enjoying making new friends and settling into the school routines. Looking back over the start of the new year, I can already see many special events enriching our children’s learning: Oak and Ash class have visited Arundel Castle, Mary Rose and Titanic classes have been to Fishbourne Roman Palace, and the children new to reception have had many exciting visitors including the police, fire brigade and most recently the dentist. Children from Columbus class have been representing the school in some sports events, and I am hoping to watch the football team after the holiday as they continue to take part in the local school league run by colleagues at Havant Academy. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing break next week, and please remember that Monday 2nd November is an INSET day. Yours sincerely

Half term: week beginning Monday 15th February 2016

Welcoming a new colleague! After half term we are looking forward to working with our new receptionist, Mrs Lou Cassidy will be joining the office team and will be at our front desk from 8am. I know she will receive a great welcome from us all!

“It was really interesting at Fishbourne Palace. The food we ate was very tasty even without the yeast in in!” Y3 child after the Fishbourne Roman Palace trip

Parent Consultations Parent consultations for years 1 to 6 take place shortly after half term on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th November. We hope that all parents will be able to attend, and will make arrangements to meet with those who are unable to make those specific dates and times. Thank you

Art in the Berewood development Today in assembly we were visited by Heather and Tom, the artists from Wayward who have designed the artwork for the Berewood Town Park. You may have seen this announced in the local papers. Oak and Ash classes then joined them for a walk to collect acorns which will be used to grow and create a new “oak forest” in the Berewood development. This design reflects our stories of Berewood too, and the graphics in our library, where you can see the beautiful forest of Bere and the River Wallington taking us from our home on a journey towards Portsmouth to see the ships built with the wood of the forest, before we travel further across the world and beyond on our “journey to excellence” If you are out and about this half term and the children find some acorns too, they are welcome to bring them to school and put them into our special acorn collection box.

Introducing Our School Houses Key Stage 2 trip This week we have introduced our school houses for children in years 1 to 6, named after birds of prey to follow our school story shown on the graphics around our building, Eagles, Owls, Hawks and Falcons. We have four houses and each has a house captain who will join the School Council. Each child will be able to “earn” house points, as another way of recognizing good manners, kind actions, excellent learning behaviours and representing the school in a positive manner. We want this to be a way of enabling children of all ages to work together for each other, with older children taking responsibility and younger children having their encouragement and support. Last term we had lots of positive feedback from parents and children about how we had been able to foster a sense of family and care for each other, and I am eager to ensure that this is not lost as we grow. I see the House system as one way in which we can nurture this whole school feel and take a real benefit from being a primary school where we can share in your child’s development over seven years. Please do let us know if there are some other ways we can work with this system to make it be a really positive addition to our school.

Mary Rose and Titanic classes went to Fishbourne Palace earlier this month. The children enjoyed learning about daily Roman life and exploring the beautiful mosaics at the Palace. A favourite part of the day was spent tasting some Roman foods and the children are looking forward to preparing their own Roman banquets using some ancient recipes!

Attendance Matters!

Governor News

At the parent consultation meetings next month you will be given an update on your child’s attendance. The expectation is that no child will fall below 90% and the school target is hoping for at least 96% attendance overall. Please do contact us if your child is unwell, and be aware that Mrs Roe or Mrs Cassidy will contact you in the morning if we have not heard from you, as part of our safeguarding procedures. Thank you.

Our Governing Body held their first committee meetings this half term and early next month their first full governing body meeting of the academic year will be held. We are delighted to be joined by our own clerk to the governors this term, Mrs Julia Bowering. If you have any issues you would like to raise with the governors they are always happy to meet with you, and our parent governors are often available on the playgrounds as they drop off or pick up their own children.
