WOODLAND BIOMASS – Dorset’s resource
Tom Munro – Dorset AONB
Woodlands in the landscape History… • 8,000 years ago: largely wooded (c.90%) • Late Bronze Age: (c.20%) • Domesday Book: 32,800 ha (12.5%) • 1750s: described as one of the ‘poorest for timber, in area & quality’ • Now: 28,758 ha (11%)

Background to Dorset AONB’s involvement… • Initiated by the Dorset Woodland Forum; noted as an important area of work in the AONB Management Plan consultations (2004) • Set up Woodlink: steering group with public & private representation
• Delivery by partnership

Dorset Woodlink Woodlink’s overall aims… • To increase management of Dorset’s woodlands for landscape & biodiversity • To promote the concept of ‘the right tree in the right place’ • To increase people’s involvement with Dorset’s trees & woodlands
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel activity… • Woodfuel promotion • Woodland management advice • Woodfuel research contract • Joining the Woodlink Steering Group & the Biomass Working Group
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel research project… • “Is there enough woodfuel out there – should I install a system?” • “Is there enough demand out there to start thinking about supplying woodfuel?”
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel resource study… • Audience: Planners, developers & policy-makers Potential woodfuel suppliers Potential woodfuel consumers
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel supply… • Forestry output • Woodfuel contractors & arb arisings – questionnaire of 25 tree surgeries • Heathland arisings - questionnaire of 14 managing organisations • Sawmills / joiners - questionnaire of 4 companies • Energy crops

Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel research conclusions… • “Is there enough woodfuel out there – should I install a system?” • Yes, there’s enough fuel! But… • Large MW installations could take majority of output • Need a step change in woodland management to achieve output • New plantings should consider woodfuel in purpose – 17-20 year broadleaved rotation coppice…?
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel research project… • “Is there enough demand out there to start thinking about supplying woodfuel?” • Yes, there’s large potential demand! But…
• Output from small woods still marginal (but economics are improving) • ‘Distribution hubs’ required
Biomass opportunities – for landscape, biodiversity & economy
Dorset Woodlink Woodfuel: economics • 100,000 tonnes available sustainably • Large potential for growth in the log market • Potential for local supply of chip • Assume £100/t as avevrage between log and chip
= £10,000,000
