The function of the onshore substation > The onshore substation provides the interface between the transmission grid and the wind farm > This involves: – Transforming the voltage from that exported from the wind farm to that of the local grid. – Ensure electricity is grid code compliant – Isolating the wind farm from the grid to ensure that problems on one side do not lead to damage on the other.

Project timetable > The onshore substation is often the first piece of the wind farm’s infrastructure to be put in place, mostly completed before offshore work starts. > The timescale of the substation contracting and build will reflect the approach being taken to the construction of the wind farm. > For Atlantic Array construction will take place in up to three separate phases > Each of the three phases could be contracted separately, providing distinct opportunities for companies. Although companies awarded contracts for the first phase will be well placed for subsequent phases. > National Grid will construct a smaller substation in the same compound which will also provide opportunities Department 6/8/2011

How the onshore substation is contracted > The substation typically forms part of a contract package which includes both the onshore and offshore substations but not the cabling. > Across the industry, these packages have generally been awarded to major electrical engineering companies. These include ABB, Alstom Grid, Siemens and Mitsubishi. > These companies will supply high and medium voltage equipment and subcontract low voltage supply, installation and civil works. > Typical cost for a 500MW wind farm substation is in the region of £35 milllion

Issues for local suppliers > Onshore substation installation is a well-established market. > Main contractor will have established relationships with specialist companies. > Opportunities for local suppliers to in providing civil engineering services and tier 3 supply to electrical installers. > Gwynt y Môr – Jones Brothers awarded - 1.8m enabling works for substation > Health and safety requirements for working in high voltage compounds.
