Joanna’s husband, Chuza, was the wealthy houseman for Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee. As such, Joanna was wealthy and well-respected. At some point in her life, Joanna suffered from an unknown illness, most likely some type of bacteria. At the time, when people suffered from an unknown illness, it was said they were inflicted by evil spirits. Joanna had been cured of her illness by Jesus, and immediately became a follower of Christ. Together with Mary Magdalene and Susanna, the women traveled with Jesus and his apostles, providing for them financially. Without these women, Jesus and his apostles would not have been able to travel extensively, teaching others about the kingdom of God. Joanna’s influence also provided Jesus with a measure of protection, which he definitely needed. Joanna stayed with Jesus through his capture, conviction and crucifixion. On Easter morning, Joanna, together with Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of James, went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. They found the stone rolled away, and encountered two angels that told the women that Jesus had risen. The women returned to the disciples and told them of their encounter with the angels, but the disciples did not believe them. “Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mover of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.” Luke 24: 10-11. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version. Joanna’s faith was so great that she left a life of wealth and influence to follow and support Jesus. Without her influence and financial support, Jesus’ story may have been very different. Joanna’s faith was rewarded by being the first to witness proclaim His resurrection.
