PRforming

Last week, 19 team members established season or lifetime personal best times. This week, the number increased to 21. This is a testament to the work that you have put in thus far, and you should applaud yourself for your successes. But the best is yet to come. In the coming weeks, we will begin the taper and sharpening phases of our training as we look to be at our peak performance as we head into conference and postseason meets. Now it’s time to turn up the focus and turn on the jets. Get your rockets fueled with the right mix: carbos, potassium, protein, and electrolytes – and you’ll be ready to blast off to new levels of excellence over the coming weeks. Be sure to cool your jets (maybe your mom or dad has said that to you before) when necessary in order to be sharp come race time – the proper rest is important to ensure that your body can do what you want it to. With the right combination of excellent practice, excellent fuel, and excellent rest, well, I think you can figure it out – excellence in races will follow, and your performances will be out of this world. (I saw the movie “The Martian” this weekend, so that may explain the aerospace references).

Lift Off

Mental Toughness

Nobody ever said it would be easy. Sometimes you have to perform at your best when you’re feeling your worst. Handle it the way the champions do – block out the hurt, the pain and the sickness from your head. Concentrate instead on what you must do to win. Shape up. Get it together. And just do it. Excuses don’t count. Anybody can make them up. Nobody cares if you’re hurt, sick or tired. Either do it or don’t. It’s that simple. Life is easy when the going is good. Mental toughness comes into play when the going gets bad. Mental toughness is also the ability to keep working towards a long term goal, while going full throttle to win a short-term battle – even in the face of adversity. For the sixth week of our season, let’s congratulate ABBY BELLISSIMO and DILLAN BRYAN. Abby ran her finest race of the season, looking strong and sharp throughout. Abby paired up with Boo Gessic as they laddered up the field of runners together throughout the race. Abby even flashed a little speed as she raced down the back stretch of the track and into the finish chute in a successful attempt to catch a couple of runners at the end of the race. Dillan established a new lifetime personal best on Friday. After getting off to a slow start, Dillan accelerated a little before the mile mark and banded with his pack through the middle of the race before catching teammate Justin Babic in the latter stages of the race and forming a great 2-3 combination. Dillan had an excellent week of practice and certainly lived Oregon coach Alberto Salazar’s creed, “When I train well I race well”. Congratulations to both Abby and Dillan!
