COMMUNITY GRANTS ASSOCIATE (Fulltime) The Calgary Foundation, through grants from a broad range of funds, enables people, corporations, foundations and other organizations of all means to enrich our community forever. The Opportunity Reporting to the Vice President, Grants and Community Initiatives, the Community Grants Associate participates in a broad range of Calgary Foundation grantmaking activities. The core responsibility of the position is the ongoing operation and management of the semi-annual Community Grants Program, which is the Foundation’s primary unrestricted grants program. The position also works with the VP, Grants and Community Initiatives to develop and deliver new grantmaking streams to address emerging and ongoing needs in the charitable sector, and which match Calgary Foundation priorities. Specific Responsibilities The Community Grants Associate works collaboratively with Foundation staff and volunteers, and with individuals and organizations in the charitable sector in the following endeavours: 1. Manage the Community Grants Program Program Operation Provide grant request advice and assistance to grant seekers from qualified donees, including those who have not previously applied for Calgary Foundation (TCF) grants; Screen applicants before the submission stage, with the purpose of encouraging appropriate proposals and discouraging inappropriate ones; Enter proposal information into granting software; Organize applicant face-to-face meetings; Participate fully in granting decision making; notify applicants of decisions; ensure that all granting requirements are met; After grants are approved, produce grant agreements and cheque letters for signature by the VP, Grants and Community Initiatives; Play a key role in determining which particular fund(s) will support specific grants; Once these funds are identified, schedule payments in the FIMS software; Ensure that all grant conditions have been satisfied before grant cheques are generated; Generate appropriate lists of approved grants for TCF website posting Work in partnership with the Grants Impact Associate to ensure that TCF receives interim and final reports, to feed into TCF’s overall evaluation processes; 1180, 1 05 12 Avenue SE Calgary, Alberta T2G 1A1 I 403-802-7700 I calgaryfoundation.org
Work with the Grants Impact Associate to assess how past grant impact reports can inform on-going improvements to our request forms and processes; Work with the Grants Impact Associate for multi-year or any “staged payment” grants, ensuring that all requirements are fully met before releasing subsequent payments. Work with the Manager of Donor Stewardship to ensure that project proposals and final reports are provided to specific donors when required; Watch for and explore opportunities to attract and support grant requests that align with the Foundation’s Vital Priorities; Work with VP, Grants and Community Initiatives, Grants Committee Chair and other grants staff to periodically review and revise Community Grants criteria; Review and revise operational aspects of the Program as necessary. Management of Volunteers Work with the VP, Grants and Community Initiatives and the Grants & Volunteer Program Associate to develop and deliver advisory committee retreats, volunteer orientations and other volunteer learning and recognition opportunities for over 60 volunteers involved in the granting process; Work with VP, Grants and Community Initiatives, Grants & Volunteer Program Associate, and the Grants Committee Chair to build, maintain and review effective grants advisory committee roles, membership and participation;
Donor Relations and Development Communicate, meet with and report as necessary to existing and prospective Community Grants Program donors; Provide information to the Gifts and Donor Relations team and donors regarding granting opportunities and project information, in order to encourage and build support for and engagement with the Community Grants Program; Represent and increase support for the Community Grants Program among donors, financial advisors, funders, and community leaders; Assist in identifying new members for grants advisory committees. Communications and Outreach Represent The Calgary Foundation and increase awareness and knowledge of the Community Grants Program in the Calgary and area charitable sector; Identify and encourage grant requests, particularly from under-represented subsectors as related to the Community Grants Guidelines;

Develop relationships with other funding and planning organizations, locally, regionally, and nationally, to strengthen analysis of grant requests and to maintain a wide range of professional contacts.
Work with Communications and Grants staff to periodically review and revise Program related communications materials and strategies; Assist in organizing and participate in grants celebration events; assist in identifying and communicating grant stories for external communication;

Additional Responsibilities Participate in the promotion and review of TCF’s proactive work including the Capacity Building initiatives, and the Strategic Opportunity Grants streams; Represent the Foundation externally to various community stakeholders, funder and granting groups, strengthening relationships with and the profile of The Calgary Foundation; Work with the Citizen Engagement Associate to ensure proper placement of requests and coordination between the Community and Neighbour grants programs. Develop grant making expertise through participation in professional development opportunities, through reading and review of materials and through development of knowledge and contacts with community foundations and related grant programs; Through strategic participation in community events, committees, convening activities and granter and funder tables, build and maintain a broad understanding of community and voluntary sector issues and priorities.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have completed a University degree in a related field plus minimum 5 years’ experience; broad knowledge of Calgary’s charitable sector as a whole; excellent verbal and written communication skills; highly professional; natural relationship-builder with exceptional diplomacy and listening skills.
