DIRECTOR, INDIGENOUS RELATIONS (Fulltime) The Calgary Foundation (CF) has been nurturing a healthy, vibrant, giving and caring community since 1955. The Foundation facilitates collaborative philanthropy by making powerful connections between donors and community organizations for the long-term benefit of Calgary and area. In 2015-16, the Calgary Foundation saw $38.8 million in new contributions, had an asset base of $822.7 million and granted $45.9 million to 883 charitable organizations.

The Opportunity The Calgary Foundation has identified that building community connections, specifically reconciliation with Indigenous People of Canada, is a vital priority for its work going forward. The Director of Indigenous Relations will guide the Foundation’s work in reconciliation, informed by the TRC report. As a member of the Leadership Team, this Director participates in foundation-wide planning, evaluation and decision-making. This person will contribute to the mission of the Foundation by building knowledge of community, engaging citizens in community building, inspiring philanthropy through stories of impact, and strengthening charities, specifically to extend the benefits of the Foundation’s work to Indigenous People of our community.

Scope of Responsibilities The responsibilities of the position span the relations with Indigenous People of Canada, living in Calgary and area, in all aspects of the Foundation, ranging from donor relations and grant making to communications and relationships with charities, donors, volunteers, staff and community partners. It includes offering leadership to the charitable sector for education and awareness of Indigenous culture and issues.

Desired Outcomes The Calgary Foundation is considered a local, regional, national and international leader in community building and philanthropy. The Foundation has recognized that Indigenous people living in Calgary face disproportionate barriers and share less in the success of living in this community. As a result of this position, the Foundation will extend its work to build a community where ALL belong, to better include Indigenous people. Taking the lead from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report, as a result of the contribution made by this position, the Foundation will form a new and more meaningful relationship with Indigenous people. The Foundation will do so in the context of understanding a key principle stated by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Canada - that the perspective is a nation to nation standpoint and emphasizes that working with Indigenous Peoples is different from a multicultural perspective.
