One panel of each: AOR-16248-200 vintage ( 8 city blocks) AOR-16252-200 vintage ( 8 city blocks) 2.6 meters -AOR-16251-2 (black Maple leaves) for sashing, border and binding (leftover fabrics can be used for part of a scrappy backing). Yardage is based on 115cm wide (44/45 inch) fabric. If prewashing wash in cold water, tumble dry low heat. CUTTING PLEASE READ ALL CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO CUT! For EACH PANEL: Carefully cut each panel into two separate lengthwise strips.
Trim the four outside edges of each panel so you have ½” black fabric all the way around. If for some reason, your top and bottom edges are uneven, you can reduce this amount to ¼” or 3/8” on top and bottom of panel. Just be sure all panels are the same size.
Panel Strips should measure 11 ¾” by 43”. If your measurement is different, just be sure to cut your sashing pieces the correct size to fit your quilt. FROM AOR-16251-2: Horizontal sashing pieces are cut from Width of fabric (WOF). TWO Vertical outer borders are cut with the lengthwise grain of fabric. See page 3 diagram. Please read all these instructions before you cut anything. Cut FIVE 5 ½” by the width of your PANEL STRIPS. Measure your panel strips (should be 43”).
Vertical Borders and Binding will be cut after Quilt panels and sashing are sewn. INSTRUCTIONS: Lay out the Sashing and Panels in the desired positions. I put the Panel strips with OTTAWA on the top and bottom. See Quilt PHOTO.
Page 2 Mark the center of the PANEL strip and the center of the Sashing Strip.
Be sure to pin and accurately sew ¼” seam. Sew with the PANEL on top so you can see the dark black border on the panel and keep the seam allowance at ¼”.
Cut TWO pieces 5 ½” by this measurement. (5 ½” by 71”) Sometimes you may want to add a couple of extra inches to this measurement in case your measuring was off. This can be trimmed away later. The key to attaching this border, is to pin. Center the border on the quilt, and then pin every 3 to 4 inches. Carefully pinning the border to the quilt, will prevent stretching. The lengthwise grain of the border will prevent a lot of stretching, but it is still possible to distort the border, if you do not pin! Sew with ¼” seam. Press seam towards the outer border. Trim off any excess of this border by using a Quilters SQUARE ruler. When trimming the excess border, be sure to keep the corner of the quilt square, by placing the quilt on your cutting matt and aligning a quilt square to two sides. Measure the vertical sides of your quilt to be sure they are the same size. Your QUILT TOP IS COMPLETE.
Press seams to one side. Press seams towards the SASHING. The Remainder of the LEAF FABRIC will be used for vertical borders, Binding and Scrappy Border. See page 3 chart. Cutting for Vertical Borders See cutting diagram on page three.
For Vertical Borders, measure the length of your quilt. It should measure approximately 70 to 71”.
BINDING: From Leaf Fabric cut FOUR strips of Fabric 2 ¼ to 2 ½” by length of fabric (70” to 71”). Sew strips together to make one continuous piece. The remainder of Leaf Fabric can be used to create a scrappy backing. SCRAPPY BORDER: Use three pieces of fabric to create A scrappy border. It is important to be sure your scrappy pieces are on grain. Additional Fabrics used for Sample include KONA SOLID Canada Red and AOR-16250-3 red.
