Exmoor National Park
• • •
5,000 households Economy dominated by farming and tourism Provides a range of ‘eco-system services’ including: landscape; wildlife; flood mitigation, water storage; carbon storage; recreational opportunities; food; renewable energy resources
Overview • Purpose of the National Park Authority • Why tackling climate change is important for Exmoor • The scale and nature of the problem in Exmoor • Our approach through the Carbon Neutral Exmoor project
Our purposes: • Conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area • Promote opportunities for understanding and enjoyment of Exmoor’s special qualities by the public
• In delivering on the National Park purposes, foster social and economic well-being
• Responding to climate change one of four key challenges • A target in place aimed at achieving carbon neutrality for the National Park by 2025

Suggested renewable energy mix
It is thought that few people in the National Park would support wind turbine development on the scale suggested here
Carbon neutral programme - transport • Increase use electric vehicles • Support development of car clubs, car sharing and demand responsive transport • Improve facilities for home-working e.g. broadband speeds • “Exploremoor”
Land management practices
• Reduction in use of nitrate fertilisers, pesticides and weed killers • Encourage good pasture management • Improved livestock management • Look after our peat stores e.g. Mire Restoration Project

Support needed Existing capacity
Carbon Neutral Exmoor Phase 1
• 3 year project supporting: – Communities in developing low carbon initiatives – Farmers and other land managers in developing approaches to tackling climate change
• Employment of a Low Carbon Communities Officer
Low Carbon Communities Challenge windfall • 2 yr action research • Understand how best to deliver transition to low carbon living • £400k approx • 100% capital funding • Funding to help engagement • Integrated into Carbon Neutral Exmoor project
Project approach • Project steering group with representation from grassroots community, public and private sectors • Develop an engagement plan • Work with enthusiastic communities first. • Help them to develop broad low carbon plans drawing in supports from across the low carbon support network (including other ENPA services) • Apply resources to getting exemplar projects off the ground • Learn as we go and not afraid to fail
