23 June 2017 Dear parent/carer EXCITING NEWS – AUTHOR VISIT FRIDAY 30TH JUNE I am pleased to inform you of another special event which is being organised for our students in year 7. To conclude the work done this year in tutor time led by Mrs Morel on “Word Millionaires”, and the learning in the library lessons and library events, we are finishing off the year with a visit from best-selling children’s author, Julia Golding. Following a lunch with our “Word Millionaires”, Julia is then working with all year 7 students for the afternoon. We hope this event will spark our students’ creativity and encourage them to take their independent reading further, as well as being a fun event to round off the year. Julia Golding is well known children’s author who has an impressive catalogue of easily accessible children’s novels suitable for 10-13 year olds. “The Diamond of Drury Lane” was re-released as a modern classic this spring. You can find out more about Julia and her work at the following websites: http://www.juliagolding.co.uk/ http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1332.Julia_Golding We will be prepping the students for this visit; they will be introduced to her books during their lessons and the library has stocked up on copies of her books. One exciting feature is that we are making a number of her books available for the students to purchase and then have signed by Julia on the day. This will be a lasting memory of the visit, make the book personal to your child and hopefully will kick start your child’s summer reading challenge! The books will be available on the day. Please complete the form (https://goo.gl/forms/BBtzGe1i3Cv6yIYC3) on your child’s behalf, indicating which titles they would like. Students wishing to purchase a book should take the money (cheque or cash) to reception. There is a finite number of each title so books will be sold on a first come first served basis. Finally, please look out for details of the English department Summer Reading Challenge which will be issued to students before the end of term and publicised on the web site; our hope is that all students will enjoy the thrills and spills of reading for pleasure as much as possible over the summer. Yours sincerely, R Buckley Acting Head of English
