22nd September 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, GCSE History and German visit to Berlin, Germany Thursday 15th February-Monday 19th February 2018 I am delighted to offer GCSE History and German (Year 9, 10 and 11) students the opportunity of travelling to Berlin (Germany) during the early part of the spring term. It will be a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience an area of historical significance and put the history that they are studying or have studied into context at Key Stage 4, especially with the GCSE modules on Germany from 1918-1945 and the Cold War 1945-1991. GCSE German students will also have the opportunity to put into practice their German and experience the culture and sights of the capital city of Berlin. The trip will commence on Thursday 15th February 2018 and returns on Monday 19th February 2018. Travel to Berlin will be via plane and the school shall organise the transfer to the airport via a coach. To accompany the trip students should hold a valid passport and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Students will take part in various activities across Berlin. There will be a focus on the Nazi era by visiting the Reichstag but also the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin and the Topography of Terror. Students will have the chance to explore Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp where over 30,000 political prisoners lost their lives during the Nazi control of Germany. We shall then explore Cold War life in Berlin by visiting various attractions such as a former East German Secret Prison, a nuclear bunker and the Berlin Wall. There will also be time for them to explore the centre of Berlin and immerse themselves in German culture. Please find the itinerary for the trip overleaf including hotel details. The itinerary is subject to booking confirmation which can only be completed once numbers are confirmed for the trip. The approximate cost of the trip will be £360, which includes coach travel, airplane travel, accommodation, breakfast, dinner, transport costs while in Berlin and all guided tours/activities which the students will be taking part in. This quote is based on 48 students, so may vary depending on numbers but should there be a dramatic increase/decrease you shall be notified and the payment schedule adjusted accordingly. Students will need to bring additional money, already converted into Euros, to buy their lunch each day (£50 recommended) and any additional spending money. In order to secure a place we will require a non-refundable deposit of £60. The preferred payment method for this trip is via ParentPay. If you already use ParentPay you will see this trip as an option to make a payment against. If you experience any difficulty with ParentPay or are not registered and would like to do so, please contact the School Finance Department. The payment schedule is attached overleaf but please note that this can be adjusted in certain cases. If your child is eligible for Pupil Premium funding, support towards the cost of school trips is available. Please contact myself directly to discuss this further. If you would like your son or daughter to attend the History trip, please pay the £60 deposit via the ParentPay system. The deadline for deposits is Friday 13th October 2017. Please note the deposit is nonrefundable but should the trip be cancelled due to lack of interest then the deposit will be returned. Behaviour will be considered when selecting pupils to attend this trip and we reserve the right to remove any child if we have behavioural/safety concerns.
