22nd September 2017 Dear Parents/Carers Year 11 GCSE Food and Nutrition Welcome back to the start of Year 11. There are a lot of key dates this year when your son/daughter will need to complete Non-examined controlled assessments (NEAs) which will count towards their final GCSE grade in Food Preparation and Nutrition. I am writing to let you know when these dates are, so that you have as much notice as possible to buy ingredients and support your child through these key elements of their course. NEA1 is a Food Investigation task which is 15% of their final grade. They will be given a task to investigate e.g. ‘Investigate the ingredients used in sweet scone baking’. They will carry out practical investigations and then report on their findings covering research, investigation and analysis. The NEA1 will start on Friday 22nd September and be completed by Friday 3rd November 2017. All written work must be completed at school under exam conditions but pupils can plan their written work at home. Deadlines for each section will be put on SMHW. The Food department will provide the ingredients for the investigations. NEA2 is a Food Preparation Task which is 35% of their final grade. This task involves lots of cooking and pupils will need to produce a portfolio to show research, practical skills demonstrated, time plans, nutritional analysis and costings for all dishes. This task includes a 3-hour practical exam. The NEA2 will run from November 13th to February 23rd 2018. The 3-hour practical exam will take place during early 2018 (exact date to be confirmed). The written exam which is 50% of their final grade is on 14th June 2018. To support your son/daughter, I highly recommend that you purchase the ‘CGP GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition for AQA (Grade 9-1) revision guide and practise book’. We have copies available for £2.75 each (£5.50 for both books). A separate letter has been sent home with an order form for these.
