CBC GREEN’UN Treasurer Barbara Huggett, bar manager Roger Stewart, buildings manager Ken Cole and catering manager Angela Jones all stood down at this year’s AGM. Barbara was standing down after a year as assistant treasurer and then nine years as treasurer. She said: “I leave the job with the club in a healthy financial position. “I would like to reiterate my thanks to Roger Stewart and Terry Yearsley for their help over the years, and I wish my successor David Folds good luck in his new role.” Chairman Richard Jones said the 2016 season had been played in a friendly and enjoyable spirit. A main reason for the season’s success was the quality of the green. Richard thanked green keeper Rob Archer and his team for all their hard work. Similar praise was repeatedly voiced by other speakers during the meeting. Achievements during the year included finishing the canopy, constructing a wall, outdoor tables and chairs, new wiring, and installation of a new cooker. Ken’s crowning glory, said Richard, was putting up a new weathervane on top of the flagpole. He appealed for a volunteer to take over Ken’s role. The other roles all have new incumbents (see p2) with Jenny Byett taking over the ladies fixture secretary role from Chris Lewis who also stood down after five years in the job. Roger Becker has been appointed to a new position in the club – welfare officer for the men’s section. His job is to keep in touch with men who are unwell, while Wendy Manning does a similar job for the ladies. In her last treasurer’s report, Barbara said that subscriptions will remain at £70 and rink fees at £2.

Weekly workouts … Work on the green and surrounds goes on throughout the year so volunteers – men and women – are asked to turn up on Thursday mornings through the winter (weather permitting) to help with maintenance. Rob Archer aims to get gaps between paving slabs filled in and to clean the carpet at the edge of the green. He would also like two extra men next season to volunteer for rolling and/or cutting the green.

All change: Barbara, Angela and Roger stood down at this year’s AGM

£750 to charity

Sportsmen’s Day

The club gave a total of £750 to Congresbury Community Pre-school which was our chosen charity for 2016 – a sum which Richard Jones, who is also pre-school chairman, said made a huge difference to the pre-school allowing them to buy new equipment. The club’s charity for 2017 will be Charlton Farm Children’s Hospice in Wraxall.

Chris Wilcock, organizer, reported that this year’s Sportsmen’s Day had been a huge success, making a profit of £2,818.

Christmas parties The club’s Christmas party will be on Saturday December 17 at 7pm in the clubhouse while the short mat section will be holding its festive fun night on Monday December 19 also in the club.

Festive greetings to everyone and best wishes especially to Charlie and Jenny Blagden, John Churchward, John Stone, Daphne Whiskin and Geoff Andrews. Good wishes also to Valerie Harding, who is to undergo a hip operation.

Good season for the men The men had had a good season, reported Mike Kimmings. They finished second in the Clevedon and District evening league. In the Somerset North Division Leagues, the A team finished second in North 1 and the B team th finished 4 in North 2. In the C&D Over 60s league the team finished mid table. The men’s team also reached the quarter final of the Wedmore Plate competition. Mike said that highlights of the season for him included the 4D match at Clevedon, which the strong opposition won by only one shot (73-72). The men also played at Portishead RBL in an evening league match and won. There had been problems in getting a team for a re-arranged Somerset league match on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Club members rallied round, said Mike, and the bonus was that they won.

Enjoyable summer for the ladies

Weekend frolics: the end-of-season trip to the Manor House in Okehampton wasn’t just about bowling – as Dawn Harrison demonstrates her gokarting skills. The trip, organised by Jenny Byett, was voted a huge success

The 2016 season just flew by, Ruth Horton told the AGM “ I can’t report that it was hugely successful, but it was enjoyable and played in good spirit. For quite a few of the ladies the standard of bowls noticeably improved through the season, which has to be encouraging, and I thank Dave, Tony and Chris for their input in this. “We won 30 of our 48 games played and of the 18 we lost, some were only by one shot. In county competitions we beat RBL twice playing in the Tony Alcock trophy (a mixed competition), but then lost to Purnell in the quarter final. “We were beaten in the first round of the Southey Cup, the second round of Top Club, and not until the third round of the Fear Cup. Sadly, we were not successful in the Mendip League, BUT we did win WDLL, making us League champions for the third year in succession. “Coincidentally, it was Congresbury’s turn to host the eight WDLL clubs for their presentation day. Thanks to Angela and her team it was very successful. “Having won the league we were able to donate £100 to our club charity, Congresbury Community Pre school, and £50 to VIBE - Visually Impaired Bowls England, from the raffle money. “Pat and I attended the AGM of Mendip League last month, which , by the way will be our turn to host next year. There were two proposals made. It seems that Victoria are in the enviable position of having ‘too many’ members now, whereas the rest of the league struggle. “The proposal made by Victoria, which was passed 4 against 2 was that should a vacancy arise, a club may be permitted to enter a second team. “The second proposal, from Isle of Wedmore, concerned matches cancelled due to lack of players, thereby giving 10 points to their opposition. This was considered to be unfair. “The proposal, which was passed by 5 against 1, was that if a team was short of a player the match should be played but with pairs against triples on the one rink. The order of play will be: Leads play as normal, the second player of the team with three players then plays three woods consecutively, and the skips play as normal. This means six woods plays nine woods on one rink with no other penalty, thereby giving both teams a chance to win points.”

Portugal here we come! The hotel is booked, the flights are booked and so are the fixtures so we are all set for next year’s tour to the Algarve. Our group is now 26 strong and we fly out at lunchtime on Monday September 25 returning 10 days later on the evening of Thursday October 5. We’re staying at the Clube Humbria (pictured) – an all-inclusive resort with apartments. There are five matches arranged – clubs in the Algarve play on grass rather than artificial surfaces so match fees are slightly higher than in Spain. Bring it on!
