CBC GREEN’UN Success boosts club’s profile
To the victors, the spoils: Roger and Clive and Kate and Chris receive their trophy from David Bryant after victories in the Clevedon Tournament
Congresbury bowlers put our club firmly on the map this season with some stunning successes. In the Somerset County final stages of ‘other’ singles competitions, Kate Herbison played three games in one day and bowled just over 300 bowls! In order to reach the final stages of the Open Championship, she beat Don Everett of Clevedon Prom and Debroy Gregory of RBL…. much to their surprise! Then in the quarter finals she played Tony

Collier from Fosseway who had just returned from competing at Worthing in the England championships where he reached the quarter finals in the singles for Somerset. After winning that match Kate played the semi-final against Don Fowls of Taunton Deane (Middleton Cup team manager) on his home green the following day and finally lost 21-19. After winning the quarter final of the Ladies Unbadged Singles in the morning, Kate lost in the semi final - her third game of the day. Brian Herbison won the County men’s Unbadged Singles final. He was also finalist in the Clevedon Tournament men’s singles after a close game. Brian was finalist too in the Clevedon and District Champion of Champions singles and also the pairs with Richard Jones. Chris Wilcock joined Kate to win Clevedon Tournament Ladies’ Pairs. Kate was also runnerup to ex England bowler Margaret Dyer in the ladies’ singles. Chris then went on to win Clevedon Open Ladies’ Triples with Dawn Harrison and Angela Jones. And, to cap it all, Roger Becker and Clive Shipway won Clevedon Tournament Men’s Pairs.
Well here we are at the end of another outdoor season and I will leave it to the Captains to report on the respective successes (and failures!!) A number of individual players, as shown on the honours list in this paper, have achieved some remarkable successes and they are to be congratulated on giving the Club a high profile in the County Association. It has again been a privilege to work with the members of the Management Committee and I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of them for their work this year which has been both busy and varied with many decisions taken and a lot of money spent! CHAIRMAN’S CHAT I also want to pay tribute to those whose names are not in ‘lights’, such as organisers of the F.N.L , Sportsman’s Day, and the Green ‘Un for their contribution in making us a ‘Club’. Nomination lists for various posts are now on display and at the time of writing we need a replacement for the redoubtable Phil Dawes and the effervescent Geoff Stenner. Both are going to be a hard act to follow but the posts must be filled. So, if you are handy with a screwdriver or can sing a good song, come and give it a whirl. The post of Catering Manager is a challenge and recent advice says that Cont’d on p2

Sunblock and iced water highlight a good season
without one we face a significant problem but no doubt this will be a hot topic at the A.G.M. I hate to use the words winter well but if you are continuing to bowl indoors have an enjoyable season and for all of you keep safe. PS I have just agreed a trial for short mat in the club! Friday night’s all right: winners of the FNL were Geoff Wilcock’s team who were presented with their engraved glasses at the FNL’s traditional closing night supper.

SOCIAL NEWS Despite rain all the morning 50 members and friends enjoyed a good day out at Evesham. The talk on the history of Evesham at the armoury museum was very interesting followed by the boat trip and cream tea; everything went off without a hitch. I would like to thank everyone for being on time and making it such a success. The social committee have put together a winter programme (see p1) that we hope you will all enjoy. To make it a success we need your support, so please make the effort to help your club. Geoff Stenner
Message from the Greenkeeper A big thank-you to all the Green staff (cutters and brushers) for their work through the season. Many thanks, Charlie

Rob Archer,
Long but enjoyable campaign It is almost time to put away our equipment until another year. Apart from closing day and a game away to Bristol Arrow, the summer season will be over. It has been a long and very busy bowls season, but I have enjoyed it. So thanks for your help and support. Finals Day has been completed. There were some very close and intense games played and congratulations to the runners-up and to the winners. It was a pity more members did not attend on these days. MEN’S CAPTAIN REPORT In the North 1 league, we ended up fourth from bottom and were relegated into North 2, losing by one shot in our final match to RBL. It is not the end of the season I wanted, so next season let's win back promotion. In the other leagues, we ended up mid-table, which could have been better if a few matches had gone our way. We played a number of friendlies and tourist sides and had our fair share of victories. My thanks to the ladies for providing our catering, to the selection team of Geoff, John, Roger and Peter as players' rep and for looking after all the stats we require. Also thanks go to Angela and the lady selectors for their assistance for mixed matches and to Charlie in preparing the green with his little helpers. I wish Roger every success next season. I am sure all members will provide him with the help and assistance he needs for a successful 2014. See you all at the AGM. Rob

Well, here we are heading to the very end of the 2013 season. The weather this season has been fantastic, only two ladies’ games at the very start of the year were postponed due to rain. We needed sunblock and iced water, not wets and thermals this year, thank goodness. The ladies have had a good season, finishing third in both the WDLL and the Mendip leagues and getting through to the quarter finals stage of the Southey Trophy. Well done to you all, not just the players but the reserves and supporters too. Well done, too, to all the ladies who have entered outside club competitions and done well. LADIES’ CAPTAIN REPORT We had one new lady member this year, Pat Baker, who has already started playing in matches and will be a great addition to the club next year. I would like to thank all the ladies for their help and support this season. It makes Monday night selection so much easier when sheets are full of names to choose from. A big thanks also goes to vice captain Chris Andrews and players rep Wendy Manning for keeping me in line. I’m sure you all will continue to give them the same help and support next year. Finally, I would like to wish a speedy recovery to Ann King and best wishes to Pat Sharps for her forthcoming op and anyone else who might not be feeling 100 per cent at the moment. We all look forward to you playing again with us next season. Winter well, Love, Angela
