The things some people will do for a pint …

Like spend six hours moving 5.5 tonnes of concrete fencing! The concrete was delivered to Mill Lane (right) and had to be manhandled down Mill Leg ready for installation on the bottom fence. Well done Boycie and the gang with a little heLp from Park Road resident Paul who had only popped to The Plough because his wi-fi was down and was press-ganged into action on his way home.

Why friendlies are cause for concern I would like to begin with thanking all the members of the club who have made the role of men’s captain as easy as it is going to be. The second point is to apologise to all the men members who feel that they are not playing enough games. The season is going well in that at the time of writing the men’s teams are playing well, kiss of death no doubt! In the C&D evening league we nd are 2 . In the Somerset Bowls Association (SBA) Saturday the ‘A’ team is top of North 1 th and the ‘B’ team 6 in North 2, with two games in hand on the teams above them. We are playing in the Wedmore Plate having lost to Bristol in the Turnbull Cup. So far a good performance, well done everyone. Selection has been good so far as the competitive matches are concerned. There have been times when we have had just the number of players needed for the teams, but we have managed to play the matches with full teams. Colin with the O60’s matches has had some problems caused by success in external competitions taking his players, hence selfinflicted problems. The area of selection that is causing problems is that of friendlies. So far this season we have

MEN’S CAPTAIN’S REPORT had to cancel one men’s friendly, reduce one from 6 to 4 rinks, and change the format of others from rinks to triples. Not a pretty picture. The situation is not good for mixed friendlies either, in that we have cancelled two matches. If we are not very careful the club will get a bad name for booking friendlies then pulling out. We still play these clubs competitively, then get moaned at during those competitive matches about the cancelled friendlies. The membership will have to consider if they want to play friendlies, or not. A discussion for the AGM I think. The final point is really a plea to members to put their names down for the tourist matches, remembering that these people are on holiday and are paying to play at our club. Also support the remaining friendlies that we do have. Thank you. I am sorry to have to write the last part of this article, but I care about our club and I am worried by this situation.

SPORTSMEN’S DAY: PLEASE SPARE AN HOUR (OR MORE!) The biggest single event fundraiser of the year – Sportsmen’s Day – is being held on Sunday August 14. All club members are urged to support this event – please give your time, your expertise, and a raffle prize. The more people who help, the lighter the load on each volunteer. But you don’t need to be there all day. Please spare what time you can, even if it is only an hour or two. You can volunteer to sell raffle tickets, help in the bar, act as a waiter taking orders, work in the kitchen, collect empty glasses and litter, or umpire. Every little helps. Thank you.

LADIES’ CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Ladies’ man: Sue Dury and Ross Keddy won the Ladies’ Invitation beating last year’s winners Chris Wilcock and Malcolm Huggett in the play-off

The ladies’ season has had a varied start. We have won more games than we have lost, but our success in Top Club has come to an end, and also our challenge in the Southey Trophy. However, we are through to the next round of the Fear Cup and we are also at the top of the Weston and District League at the moment. Congratulations to Kate on going through to finals at Leamington in the Two Wood competition. We wish her well. We hosted a very successful County game between Somerset and Worcestersshire last month and I would like to thank Angela and Barbara for their hard work to serve an excellent meal which was enjoyed by all. We have missed Esme so far this season after she fell and broke her arm. But I am glad to report that she has made good progress and has started bowling again now. It is great to welcome Jayne Craig to the club and wish her every success and happy bowling. Thank you for your support during this first half of the season. Please continue to sign up on the team sheets and let’s hope our success is even greater during the second half of this season. Happy bowling.

Kate makes national finals for third year Hello all, We are about half way through the season and I hope that you are all enjoying your friendly games and competitive matches . Our league teams are doing well so far, and several individuals have had great success in various county competitions. In all the home matches that I have played in, the visiting teams have consistently commented favourably on the condition of our green. Many thanks to Rob and all the cutting team. You will have seen that the concrete panels have arrived so that we can build a new bottom fence to replace our current one which is slowly falling away. Again huge thanks to the team who carried the panels in and to the ones who have been cutting back the

CHAIRMAN’S CHAT bushes so that the new posts can be put in. We are starting to see some parking issues with the new residents in Mill Lane. If you park near the new houses try not to block their drives, doors and windows - they don't have many - and perhaps we'll find that our available parking has actually increased. I know some members and exmembers have not been very well recently and we all hope that they will be better soon. I wish everyone good luck for the rest of the season and hope to see many of you at the BBQ on Saturday 23 July.

Situations vacant as Angela and Ken resign Volunteers are needed to take on the positions of catering manager and buildings manager for next year. Angela and Ken have said they will be standing down at this year’s AGM.

Kate Herbison is through to the National Finals at Royal Leamington Spa for the third year running. Repeating her achievement of 2014, she won the quarter and semi finals at Ilminster on Thursday 7th July this year. In 2015, Kate was EBA singles finalist and SBA ladies singles finalist. In 2014, Kate was runner up in the Women's National two-wood singles Championships final held at the Bowls England headquarters at Leamington. She will now represent Somerset at the National Finals in August along with another local bowler, Liz Taylor of Long Ashton, who Kate will meet in the County Finals on September 11.

Phantom of the changing room revealed … a hedgehog, found in the Hon Sec’s obviously under-used coaching bag. Questions will be asked!
