CHARTER COMMUNITY SCHOOL K-6 & 7-12 MAY 2015 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director
Charter Community School 7-12 News Greetings CCS Families and Friends, The fourth quarter is already in progress and here are some of the activities that have already taken place: During March Madness Charter Community School hosted a basketball game versus El Dorado Trade School. It was a rough fought game but eventually CCS came away with the win 69-41. Our thanks goes to Susan Kindelt who teaches PE at both sites for putting everything together. Also, in March Mr. Dimas, a UC Davis alumni, enabled 7 of our students an opportunity to visit the UC Davis campus to learn about their programs and get a taste of college life. The month of March also included a visit from the Accrediting Commission for Schools Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for our six year accreditation review. The Accrediting Commission submitted their report to WASC with a recommendation on the status of our accreditation. The accreditation status is based on all of the information provided by the school, including a self-study report, and the satisfactory completion of the onsite accreditation visit. We are pleased to say we have received the decision of the Commission to grant a Six-Year Accreditation Status, the maximum, through June 30, 2021. Here are just a few highlights from the WASC report. *Charter teachers use a variety of teaching strategies and are adept at changing their teaching style based on the clientele. Charter utilizes community resources to support students through field trips, presentations, speakers, and donations of time and resources from the community. Communication to parents is regular and deliberate through personal contacts, email, and the website. (pg 29)
*The school demonstrates caring, concern, and high expectations for students in an environment that honors individual differences and is conducive to learning. (pg 29) *The school has an atmosphere of trust, respect, and professionalism. (pg 29) *The school wide action plan is clear and is supported by all staff and EDCOE. The action plan addresses key areas of need in student achievement in ELA and Math. The goals set forth in the plan are achievable while moving the school towards more successful students in ELA and Math. The college and career readiness goals are also achievable and necessary for 21st Century learning. (pg 35) *Staff across programs are passionate advocates for their students and are highly involved in pursuing the best possible outcomes for their students; be it technology, curriculum, facilities, support services such as counseling or instilling a sense of fairness and family in troubled students. .. Staffs are dedicated to their profession and students and this was evidenced by the respect given them by various student groups and other stakeholders. Stakeholders voiced their happiness with the choices offered by Charter and many had students enrolled in more than one of Charter’s programs. (pg 35) *Program leads are very energetic and proactive, suggesting solutions which can be acted on almost immediately for the benefit of students. Individual creativity in solving problems is encouraged and acted on by Charter’s leaders. The entire school is highly dedicated to student success rather than individual staff successes. (pg 36)

Charter Community School Newsletter
Charter Community School May 2015 Newsletter Charter Alternative Programs “March Madness” During the month of March CCS became as frenzied as the rest of the nation with March Madness. This year CCS invited El Dorado Trade to a basketball game to cap off our traditional contests. The El Dorado Trade School students took on the home team, Charter Community School in a fun-filled morning of basketball competitions. The events took place on Tuesday, March 24th. Susan Kindelt, the Physical Education instructor for both campuses, coordinated the collaborative events. Both schools demonstrated incredible sportsmanship, cheering each other on during the events. Prior to the basketball game there were some skill based competitions that included a free throw and a 3point competition, an obstacle course, and a 4 pot shoot. The results are listed below. After a quick intersession, the March Madness culminated in a full court basketball game in the main gym. Although the CCS students got out to a fast start, strong play by EDTS cut the lead to 8 with just 10 minutes left. Another burst from CCS put the game out of reach down the stretch. Clay Lessley and Anthony Smith were close to unstoppable under the hoop during the full court game as they contributed the bulk of the points scored for CCS. Both teams shook hands and assisted in cleaning the gym before heading back to their respective campuses. A special thanks to Susan for organizing the event and coaching CCS, Matt Medellin for coaching EDTS, Chris Staver for assisting, and James Woods for refereeing the game.
