"I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all my heart." - Vincent van Gogh Day One Assignment: Assess your creative condition. Where are you now? 1) Let's take some measurements. This isn't a quiz ... there are no right or wrong answers. Just a few questions to get you thinking. • • • • •
On a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest), how satisfied are you with the creative work you're producing? When you begin to work on a creative project, are you excited, a little uncertain, a procrastinator? As the project progresses, do you find yourself right on target, or feeling your way, not sure how far you should go? As the project nears completion, are you energized or worn out? What would you say is your biggest obstacle to creativity?
2) Write a six-word statement (no more, no less) that describes your current creative condition. Examples: Get me out of this desert! I wish I were more artistic. I'm okay, I guess. Sort of. 3) Make a firm commitment to spend a specific amount of time each day on your journey toward creative inspiration. It can be as little as 15 minutes, because that's all some people can spare. It can be as long as an hour or more, if you have that kind of time available. The key is commitment. You'll get out of the class what you put into it. If you don't invest the time, you won't see results. Law of nature ... like sowing and reaping. Don't obsess about the amount of time you plan to invest. 15 minutes is just as valid as an hour, as long as you're focused and uninterrupted. So settle on a time, and guard it. It's YOURS. A good way to ensure success is to be accountable to someone who supports your creative efforts. Maybe that's your spouse, a friend, a family member. Let someone know you're taking this class, that you've committed to a specific amount of time each day, and ask them to keep you accountable to your commitment. Maybe they can watch the kids for you while you have your "creative time." Or maybe they can call you each day to check in and see how you're doing. Chances are your accountability buddy will enjoy encouraging you and sharing in your creative growth. That's all for today! A little reflection, a six-word sentence, and a commitment to continue. I'll see you back here tomorrow!
