lthough a pair of losses at Niagara University right before the break took some of the luster off of the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team’s strong start to the 200506 campaign, the Golden Knights can reflect back on several major accomplishments in the opening half of their third season as a Division I program. Guided by head coach Rick Seeley and assistant coaches Shannon Smith and Laura Hays, Clarkson entered the 19-day exam/holiday break with an 11-6-1 overall record and was ranked 10th in the nation by both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll and the USCHO.com Division I Women’s Poll. Clarkson closed out the 2005 portion of the ECAC Hockey League schedule in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings with a 6-2 conference mark. The Knights are back in action on December 30-31 when they play Boston College at the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, NY. Clarkson, which will have played 15 of its first 20 games away from Potsdam, will open an eight-game home stand spanning all of January and into the first weekend of February when it hosts Robert Morris at Cheel Arena on January 7. Highlighting the 2005 portion of the schedule have been four wins over top 10 rated foes. Clarkson put an exclamation point on the young program’s success and made believers of many in the Division I ranks with its stunning 2-0 victory over number-one ranked St. Lawrence University on December 2 before a record crowd of 1,946 fans at Cheel Arena. With the win over the Saints, the Knights have now knocked off three of the four teams in last year’s NCAA Frozen Four, including perennial ECACHL powers Harvard (4-3) and Dartmouth (1-0) on the road on November 12-13. Led by junior captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT) and assistant captains, classmates Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT), Emma Madigan (Mississauga, ONT) and Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH), Clarkson has received steady, balanced play from the goal on out. The Knights boast the number two offense and defense in ECACHL play averaging 3.75 goals per game in conference action, while holding their league opponents to just 1.12 GPG in league play. Overall, Clarkson is scoring 2.72 GPG and is fourth in the nation in defensive scoring allowing just 1.56 GPG.. One of the top goaltenders in the nation, junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) has posted some impressive numbers through the first 17 games. Playing the second most minutes (943:11) between the pipes of any goaltender in the country, Hurley holds a .925 save percentage, a 1.40 goals against average and has posted an NCAA-best six shutouts. Hurley has been named ECACHL Goaltender of the Week three times this season. Shaidle paces a Clarkson offense that gets contributions from all four lines. The Knights’ alltime leading scorer with 64 points, including 31 goals through 85 games, she has contributed a team-high 15 points (8-7) this season. Clarkson’s top rookie scorer, freshman Micheleen Devine (Medicine Hat, ALB) chips in 12 points, including eight goals. Sophomores Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) (3-7) and Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT), Clarkson’s leading playmaker with nine assists, round out the Green and Gold’s double figure scorers with 10 points each. In its last action before the break, the Knights dominated on the shot chart against Niagara with a 77-32 shot advantage over the two-game series, but could not turn that effort into goals as they fell to the Purple Eagles 4-1 and 1-0 on December 9-10 in Western New York. Boston College, guided by head coach Tom Mutch, owns a 6-4-4 overall record and is in third place in Hockey East with a 5-2-1 conference slate. The Eagles defeated Northeastern 54 at home on December 10 in their last action. Clarkson and Boston College will meet for the second straight year in Lake Placid over the holidays. Last season, the teams open the New Year with the Eagles gaining a 1-0 win at the Olympic Arena on January 1. The following day, the Knights rallied behind a late second period goal by Bailkowski to gain a 1-1 tie against BC. www.clarksonathletics.com

*ECAC Hockey League Game; ^Lake Placid, N.Y.; #Bay Roberts, Nfld.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Three ECAC Hockey League women's teams played games last week, with Dartmouth and Harvard facing each other and Union taking in two exhibition contests. The remaining eight teams were idle due to exams and the holiday break. In league play, Harvard played host to Dartmouth last Wednesday and earned a 4-1 victory. Freshman forward Jenny Brine registered her first collegiate hat trick, while linemates Jennifer Raimondi and Katie Johnston had three assists each as the No. 9 Crimson completed a five-game homestand with the win over the Big Green. Brine scored Harvard's first three goals, including a pair of tallies 1:44 apart in the third period as the Crimson built a 30 lead. That was plenty for Crimson goaltender Ali Boe, who finished with 17 saves. Dartmouth closed to within two with 4:35 left in the third period when Carrie Thompson scored her sixth goal of the season to make it 3-1. But freshman Sarah Wilson iced it for Harvard as her empty-net power-play goal with eight seconds left put Harvard back on top by three. In non-league action, Union traveled to Canada and split a set of games against Brock University in exhibition play. Game one saw the Dutchwomen claim a 4-2 victory, while game two was a 7-2 loss. Due to the holiday In the first contest, three first period goals were all Union break and limited needed as the defense held the rest of the way. Sophomore number of games, the Maeve Kehoe led the Dutchwomen with two goals. Elise next weekly league Nichols and Ashley Kilstein also scored, while Alex Zirbel release will be on stopped 19 shots to earn the win. Tuesday, Jan. 10. The next day, Brock had one player with five goals lead the way to downing the Dutchwomen. Freshman Gabi Wintner scored both Union goals on the power play. All 11 women's teams are idle this week and some teams will resume play on Friday, Dec. 30. For complete information on the ECAC Hockey League and its 12 teams, log online at www.ecachockeyleague.com.

After a scoreless first period, Clarkson struck first as freshman Marie-Jo Gaudet tallied her first collegiate goal, unassisted at 2:38 of the middle frame. Clarkson held the lead for the next 11 minutes before a penalty ended the Knights’ advantage. The Lakers scored one minute into their powerplay to tie the game at 13:10. Mercyhurst didn’t wait much longer as the Lakers scored their second goal just two and a half minutes later at 15:56. Kira Hurley finished with 27 saves for Clarkson.

Jessica Cloutier scored twice in the seasondebut as the Golden Knights beat former ECACHL foe Vermont 3-1 on the road to start their third season. The Catamounts enjoyed a 1-0 lead for the first time in the past four meetings against Clarkson with the first goal of the game at 14:44 of the opening period. The advantage was shortlived, however, as Cloutier scored the fifth goal of her career with an unassisted marker at 16:23 in the first period. Clarkson began to take control in the second period with a 12-9 advantage in shots, leading to what would prove to be the game-winning goal from Melissa Marshall at 12:30 of the period. Meghan Park assisted on the game-winning goal. The Knights added a third goal in the final period with Cloutier scoring her second goal at 13:42, a power-play marker, with the assist going to Katie Morrison. Kira Hurley made 25 saves.

over the Saints, the Golden Knights have now knocked off three of the four teams in last year’s NCAA Frozen Four, including perennial ECACHL powers Harvard (4-3) and Dartmouth (1-0) on the road on November 12-13. Led by junior captain Lindsay Williams and assistant captains, classmates Christine Bailkowski, Emma Madigan and Ashley Shaidle, Clarkson has received steady, balanced play from the goal on out.

Despite an overwhelming offensive effort where the Green and Gold enjoyed a 35-14 shot advantage, Clarkson had to battle from behind to gain the tie. Assistant captain Ashley Shaidle scored her second goal of the season and 25th career marker with only 3 minutes and 12 seconds remaining to help keep Clarkson unbeaten on the road at 3-0-1. The key to the game for the Warriors was their penalty-killing effort as they held Clarkson to 0-for-8 with the man advantage while producing one goal in five chances themselves on the power play.

Christine Bailkowski scored her first goal of the season and 12th of her career on a pass from Katie Morrison just 95 seconds into the game for all the scoring the Golden Knights would need in their weekend series opener at Wayne State. Kira Hurley was strong in goal for Clarkson, stopping all 17 shots by the warriors for her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Andrea Maluta added an unassisted insurance goal midway through the third as the Green and Gold snapped a three-game winless skid against Wayne State.

After proving a worthy adversary in a one-goal game on Friday, Clarkson struggled against 8thranked Mercyhurst in game two of their weekend series on Saturday. The Lakers jumped on Clarkson early with a 12-1 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes with three of those on-goal attempts making it past Knights’ goaltender Kira Hurley. A goalie change by Clarkson after the first period did little to end the Lakers dominance as they out shot the Knights 11-4 in the second stanza and 11-3 in the third period while putting three more goals on the scoreboard. Hurley made nine saves in the opening 20 minutes and Stephanie Hansen closed out the final two periods by making 19 saves and allowing three goals.

Freshman defenseman Kimberly McKenney made her first collegiate goal a very memorable one as she connected off an assist from classmate Marie-Jo Gaudet at 13:29 of the first period for the game’s lone goal in Sunday’s contest at eighth-ranked Dartmouth. That was all the scoring the Knights would need in their third straight victory over a Top 10 ranked foe as Kira Hurley, with a solid team defensive effort in front of her, posted her fifth shutout of the season and 12th career whitewash behind 16 saves.

A three-goal first period outburst saw Clarkson continue its hot streak as the Knights shocked fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten Harvard on its home ice. Ashley Shaidle opened the scoring at 5:30, but the Crimson quickly tallied the equalizer at 6:51. Clarkson took control with two more goals in the opening stanza as Micheleen Devine and Melissa Marshall scored within six minutes of the Harvard goal. The Knights extended their lead in what was a dominating effort in the second period. Clarkson out shot Harvard 13-4 in the middle frame with a powerplay goal by Sophie Doyon giving the Knights a 4-1 advantage at 13:10. The third period saw the Crimson trim the Knights lead to a single goal with a power-play goal midway through the stanza and a late-period tally with less than a minute to play. Kira Hurley stopped 20 shots.

Clarkson's bid to gain its fourth straight win over a nationally-ranked foe came up short in New Jersey as the Golden Knights fell by one goal to eighth-ranked Princeton. After a scoreless first period, Princeton took the lead in the second with a power-play tally and then made it 2-0 64 seconds into the final frame. Captain Lindsay Williams put the Green and Gold on the scoreboard with her second goal of the season, an unassisted shorthanded marker at 15:24. The Knights, however, could not come up with the equalizer. Princeton out shot Clarkson 25-21. Kira Hurley made 23 saves. The Knights were 0-of-3 on the power play while the Tigers were 1-of-3 with the man advantage.

Another strong effort in goal by Kira Hurley and an opportunistic offense helped to lift Clarkson to the biggest victory in the program’s brief history as the Golden Knights shut out number-one ranked St. Lawrence before a Cheel Arena record crowd of close to 2,000. Hurley posted a season-high 34 saves and Jessica Cloutier and Ashley Shaidle tallied first period goals as the Knights handed the Saints their first loss of the season. Cloutier finished off a centering pass in the slot from Brooke Beazer at 3:25 on Clarkson’s first shot of the game. With just 54 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Shaidle netted a power-play goal in front off a pass from the side of the net from captain Lindsay Williams. The Knights, who were out shot 34-8, held SLU’s number-two ranked power play off the scoreboard by killing off all five Saints’ manadvantage opportunities, while scoring one in six chances against SLU’s number-two ranked penalty-killing unit.

Although Clarkson came up short in its bid to upset St. Lawrence, the Golden Knights certainly showed they could skate with the number-one ranked team in the nation before a record crowd of 2,136 in Canton. The Knights, who already knocked off three Top 10 ranked teams, looked to be on their way to another win over a nationally-rated foe when they jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Saints. St. Lawrence, however, which boasted the second best power play in Division I, answered back with three straight goals, including two with the man advantage to remain unbeaten. Emma Madigan put an early scare into the Saints giving Clarkson a 1-0 first period lead when she poked in a loose puck during a scramble at the top of the crease at 8:27 for her second goal of the year. SLU picked up its pace in the middle stanza and scored on the power play at 8:48. The Saints pulled away in the third with two more goals. Clarkson out shot St. Lawrence 9-7 through the opening 20 minutes, but the Saints ended the game with a 20-14 shot advantage.

Micheleen Devine scored two goals to highlight a dominating effort as the ninth-ranked Golden Knights got back on the winning track. Clarkson broke open a scoreless first-period tie with a four-goal second-period outburst. Christina Valesente opened the scoring with her second goal of the season at 12:56 of the middle stanza. Jessica Cloutier followed with her fourth of the year 49 seconds later. Melissa Marshall made it 3-0 at 15:34 with her fourth tally of the season and Devine closed out the period with her first goal of the contest at 16:26. Quinnipiac got on the scoreboard at 5:42 of the third period, but 19 seconds later Devine answered back with her team-high 8th goal of the year to put to rest any hopes of a Bobcat comeback. Brooke Beazer set up three goals, while captain Lindsay Williams and Katie Morrison chipped in two assists each. The Knights out shot Quinnipiac 36-10.
