astern College Athletic Conference Hockey League regular sea son action comes to a close this weekend with the Clarkson University Women’s team in prime position to lock up a home-ice berth in the opening round of the upcoming playoffs. Guided by head coach Rick Seeley and assistant coaches Shannon Smith and Laura Hays, the Golden Knights own a 21-10-1 overall record and stand in third place in the conference with a 12-6 league mark. With at least three points this weekend, Clarkson will secure one of the top four spots in the league standings, which would guarantee the Green and Gold home ice. St. Lawrence and Princeton will finish first and second in some order. The final two home playoff spots are up for grabs between Clarkson, Brown and Harvard. Eight teams qualify for ECACHL postseason play, which will begin on March 3-5 at the home arena of the top four teams. Winners of the first round, best-of-three game series, will advance to the championship tournament, which will be played at the highest remaining seed on March 11-12. Although the Knights control their own fate, they will face a challenging task this weekend as they host a pair of traditional NCAA powers in Dartmouth and Harvard. Junior captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT), a finalist for Hockey’s Humanitarian Award, leads Clarkson, which is ranked eighth in the country. The Knights are coming off a split in New England last weekend, where Clarkson shut out Yale 2-0 in New Haven, CT on Friday, before falling to Brown 3-1 in Providence on Saturday. Junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) was on top of her game once again in the win at Yale, posting 28 saves, including a season-high 16 stops in the third period, to post her NCAA-leading 10th shutout of the season. Sophomore Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) and junior assistant captain Emma Madigan (Mississauga, ONT) provided the offense with a goal apiece. The Knights could not continue their momentum the following afternoon as Brown grabbed a 3-0 lead early in the second period before freshman Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) put Clarkson on the scoreboard later in the stanza. A legitimate candidate for All-America honors, Hurley backbones the number one defense in the country, which is allowing only 1.22 goals per game and boasts 12 shutouts. Through 30 starts, Hurley posts a .937 save percentage and a 1.20 GAA en route to a 20-9-1 record. Junior assistant captain Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) leads Clarkson’s opportunistic offense with 27 points on 16 goals and 11 assists. Sophomore Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) follows with 20 points, including a teamhigh 13 assists. www.clarksonathletics.com

Clarkson has killed off 29 straight opponent power plays and has not given up a man-advantage goal in the past 10 games. The Knights’ are the least penalized team in the nation, averaging only 6.8 minutes per game, and own the best penalty kill in Division I at 92.1% (94-102). On the power play, the Knights click at 14.9% (25-168) with Shaidle leading the way with a team-high six man-advantage markers. Guided by third-year head coach Mark Hudak, Dartmouth College owns an 11-10-4 overall record and is sixth in the ECACHL with an 8-7-3 league slate. The Big Green are coming off a sweep of Colgate and Cornell, both by 2-1 margins in Hanover, NH last weekend. Dartmouth can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth in the standings. Defending league champion Harvard University enters the North Country with a 13-10-4 overall record and is two points behind Clarkson in the standings with a fifth-place 9-5-4 conference mark. Guided by 12th-year head coach Katey Stone, the Crimson split a weekend series in Cambridge, MA this past weekend, falling to Cornell 4-3, but shutting out Colgate 3-0. Clarkson is 1-2 against Dartmouth in their series with the Knights picking up their first win on November 13 with a 1-0 victory at Thompson Arena. Clarkson also recorded its win ever over Harvard on the same weekend with a 4-3 triumph at Bright Hockey Center on November 12 to cut the deficit in their series to 4-1.

Kira Hurley leads the NCAA with 10 shutouts.

The two teams also played Clarkson, with the Golden Knights downing Yale before falling to Brown. Hayley Moore led the way in the Bear's victory, with two goals and an assist. Two different players scored Saturday, February 18: for Clarkson in the win over the Bulldogs, with four different players picking up the assists. * Colgate 7 at Harvard 1 Princeton sits two points behind the Saints after its sweep last week vs. Union. The Tigers went * Clarkson 0 at Brown 3 to Schenectady and scored 11 goals over the two games.
