fter a two-game series against nationally-ranked Mercyhurst College in Potsdam this past weekend, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team takes to the road to close out the month of October. The Golden Knights, guided by head coach Rick Seeley and assistant coaches Shannon Smith and Laura Hays, begin a four-game road trip at Wayne State University this Friday and Saturday at City Sports Center Arena in Detroit. In its home-opening weekend at Cheel Arena, Clarkson dropped a pair of games against the eighth-ranked Lakers, falling 2-1 and 6-0. The Knights, who opened the 2005-06 campaign with a sweep of the University of Vermont in Burlington, winning 3-1 and 2-0 on October 7-8, own a 2-2 record. A young team, with no seniors, Clarkson’s goal scoring has been evenly distributed between its juniors, sophomores and freshmen with each class accounting for two goals. Sophomore Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) leads the Green and Gold in scoring with two goals. Freshman Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) also has two points with one goal and one assist. Gaudet tallied the lone Clarkson goal last weekend. Junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) has started all four games in the Knights’ net and posts a .929 save percentage and a 1.81 goals against average. Classmate Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) played the final two periods in Saturday’s game against Mercyhurst and finished with 19 saves on 22 shots. In specialty teams play, the Knights have allowed their opponents just one power-play goal in 21 opportunities, but have scored just one themselves in 20 man-advantage chances. Wayne State, of College Hockey America, will look to break out of a season-opening four-game losing streak. The Warriors, guided by third-year head coach Jim Fetter, gave top-ranked St. Lawrence University all it could handle last Friday before falling to the Saints 3-2. On Saturday, Wayne State was shut out by Clarkson’s North Country neighbor 4-0. The Warriors are winless in their last nine games, dating back to last season. Their last victory came on Feb. 19, 2005, in a 2-1 effort at Quinnipiac. Wayne State leads the series against Clarkson, 2-1-2. After losing the first game of the series, 3-0, in Detroit on Jan. 5, 2004, the Warriors swept the Knights in Potsdam later that season, posting a pair of 2-1 victories on January 31 and February 1, 2004. The teams tied twice last season at Cheel Arena (2-2, 3-3) on October 22-23. Clarkson, which plays nine of its next 11 games on the road, opens ECAC Hockey League play at Union College on October 29-30.

ALBANY, N.Y. - The St. Lawrence Saints earned two wins on the road last weekend, while several other ECAC Hockey League women's teams were also in action. These next two weeks are important ones in out-of-league play, as conference contests will be heating up in the ever competitive ECACHL. Quinnipiac opened up play last week with an early Tuesday game at Boston University. The Bobcats skated to a 2-2 tie vs. the Terriers. The team then went back to Beantown over the weekend to take on Boston College and fell in overtime. Freshman Hayley McMeekin led the Bobcats in the loss, scoring two goals, including the equalizer to send the game to OT. McMeekin was one of eight rookies to see action for Quinnipiac in the two games, including goaltender Connie Craig, who started Saturday's game. The Saints earned their two wins over Wayne State last weekend with solid play from top to bottom. Newcomer Carson Duggan was the leader of the freshmen, scoring her first goal in the opening minute of play on Friday and then adding two more for a hat trick, knocking off two collegiate milestone in one full swoop. Her three goals, along with a +3 rating for the weekend, earned her the league's Rookie of the Week honors. Defensively, senior netminder Jessica Moffat stood up to the task and earned both wins, including the 4-0 shutout on Saturday. The blanking was the ninth of her career and helped earn her Goaltender of the Week honors. Colgate played a home-an-home series over the weekend, facing Rensselaer at home before heading to Troy, N.Y., for game two of the set. Both games were hard fought and needed overtime to settle things. On Friday, the Engineers took the game, while Saturday was a 1-all draw. Junior defenseman Tara French was named the league's Player of the Week after leading the raiders with three points in the two games. She helped overcome a 2-0 deficit on Friday, by assisting on the first goal and then tied the game at 2-all in the third period, setting up overtime. She then added an assist on Saturday's lone goal, a power-play marker. Clarkson and Union were also in action over the weekend, and both fell to non-league opponents. The Golden Knights lost twice to Mercyhurst, and the Dutchwomen lost twice to Boston University. This week's games get started tomorrow night, Oct. 19, with Quinnipiac entertaining Northeastern. The Bobcats will then travel out west to take on North Dakota in two games over the weekend. Clarkson is also heading in that direction, with a two-game set at Wayne State. Colgate will stay on the East coast with two games at Providence, while St. Lawrence, Dartmouth and Yale will all play a home exhibition vs. McGill.
