A periodical for members of NCSBT’s Workers’ Compensation Fund

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY Our members are busy readying their buildings for the scores of students and staff that will be walking through the doors in the coming weeks. Utilize the tips below and make sure safety is at the forefront of employees’ minds as they prepare for the school year ahead. Use stepstools and ladders. — How often do your employees stand on chairs to hang items or decorate bulletin boards? Falls in the workplace frequently involve employees standing on uneven surfaces and using ladders incorrectly. Make sure your employees know where to find ladders and stepstools and how to use them properly. Protect your back. — Moving boxes and furniture the wrong way can cause back injuries. Remind staff to lift with their legs and to keep items in front of them and out of their field of vision while carrying them. See PMA’s Safe Lifting Guidelines for more information. Minimize use of extension cords. — Extension cords pose a trip hazard as well as an electrical danger. Encourage employees to use outlets as close to their work areas as possible. Extension cords should be used only temporarily and should not be used as a permanent power source. Learn more about extension cord safety here.
