Company Registrations, Q1 2015

2 April 2015

There were 1,379 businesses registered in Buckinghamshire in the first quarter of 2015, according to Companies House, more than in any quarter of 2014. Only ten of the 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships bettered the national rate of new company registration, with Buckinghamshire ranking 7th, with 33.5 registrations for every 10,000 residents aged 16 or over. Buckinghamshire ranked third among county council areas behind Hertfordshire and Surrey. While the most new businesses were registered in Wycombe (433), South Bucks recorded the highest registration rate at 50.3 for every 10,000 residents, the 33rd highest of all 380 local authorities in Great Britain and tenth highest outside London. Chiltern was the only other Buckinghamshire district to better the national rate. Sources: Companies House, 2015; MYPE, ONS, 2014 The rate of new business registration in London is almost twice that of Hertfordshire, the next highest ranked LEP and more than two and half times above the rate for England as a whole. All 33 local authorities in London bettered the national registration rate, from 34.1 new registrations for every 10,000 residents in Sutton to 2,129 in the City of London. Almost a third (32.5 per cent) of England’s new registrations were in London, where the 51,603 new companies was well ahead of the 9,267 registered in the South East LEP and the 7,174 in Greater Manchester. The local authorities with the highest registrations are presented in table 2 below, with London accounting for eight of the top ten places and 17 of the top 20. Bolsover (Derbyshire, 5th), Watford (8th), Rushcliffe (Nottinghamshire, 11th), Warrington (13th), Hertsmere (Hertfordshire, 14th) and Poole (21st) are the best placed local authorities outside London. Manchester is the best placed of the core cities ranking 34th, ahead of Birmingham (42nd) and Bristol (55th). Liverpool (109th), Leeds (111th), Nottingham (176th), Newcastle (183th) and Sheffield (206th) all failed to match England’s registration rate. Only 91 of England’s 326 local authorities bettered the national rate of new business registration. Registration rates across the country are presented in the map at the end of this bulletin, with performance by LEP shown in table 3.
