There were 1,203 businesses registered in Buckinghamshire in the final quarter of 2014, according to Companies House, bringing the total for the year to 4,888. Only nine of the 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships bettered the national rate of new company registration, Buckinghamshire ranking 6th, with 29.2 registrations for every 10,000 residents aged 16 or over. Buckinghamshire ranked third among county council areas behind Hertfordshire and Surrey. While the most new businesses were registered in Wycombe (380), South Bucks recorded the highest registration rate at 47.5 for every 10,000 residents, the 27th highest of all 380 local authorities in Great Britain and sixth highest outside London. Aylesbury Vale was the only Buckinghamshire district not to better the national rate. All 33 local authorities in London bettered the national registration rate, from 28.4 new registrations for every 10,000 residents in Sutton to 1,987 in the City of London. A third (33.4 per cent) of new registrations were in London, where the 45,565 new companies was well ahead of the 7,743 registered in the South East LEP and the 6,098 in Greater Manchester. The local authorities with the highest registrations are presented in table 2 below, with London accounting for eight of the top ten places and 17 of the top 20. Rushcliffe (Nottinghamshire, 5th), Warrington (9th), Watford (12th) Hertsmere (Hertfordshire, 13th) Bolsover (Derbyshire, 20th) and South Bucks (27th) are the best placed local authorities outside London. Manchester is the best placed of the core cities ranking 30th, ahead of Birmingham (40th) and Bristol (54th). Leeds (101st), Liverpool (107th), Nottingham (156th), Newcastle (184th) and Sheffield (203rd) all failed to match England’s registration rate. Only 93 of England’s 326 local authorities bettered the national rate of new business registration.
