Market Theme U.S. stock benchmarks logged slight gains on Wednesday, helping to halt a two-day skid for equities. However, volumes were seasonally low and activity muted as investors are reluctant to make big bets with just a few trading days remaining in 2017. Asian shares marched toward a decade high on Thursday, on track for their best annual performance since 2009 as investors bet on a bright outlook for the global economy with copper at a four-year peak.
Chart of the Day A rally spurred by Cyril Ramaphosa’s victory to lead South Africa’s ruling party has sent the rand to its strongest level in more than eight years relative to its 50-day moving average. The currency rose about 7 percent since the vote in mid-December to 12.2684 per dollar on Wednesday compared with 50day average of 13.69.
