Maria Diaz: Design Your Own Cross Stitch Christmas Gift Bag

Sophie Long: Needlepainting and Ribbon Embroidery

Nancy Nicholson: Modern Folk Embroidery Christmas Garland

With a love for art and needlecraft from a young age, Maria Diaz became DMC’s first in-house cross stitch designer in 1989 and went on to become an independent specialist needlecraft consultant in London. She is the author of numerous cross stitch books and regularly features in needlecraft magazines. Now with two young boys, Maria finds herself back in the Midlands along with her greatgrandmother’s foot-treadled Singer.

Sophie Long graduated from the Royal School of Needlework in 2008, having mastered more than 30 hand embroidery techniques including silk shading and goldwork. Sophie’s passion and undeniable talent for embroidery is displayed through her original works and classes for the RSN and others. Sophie’s big moment came when she was invited to be one of the team that worked on Kate Middleton’s wedding dress.

Having grown up surrounded by the influences of the embroideress and author Joan Nicholson, Nancy went on to study Graphic Design and then Textiles at the Royal College of Art. She spent many years working with vintage fabrics to make oneoff machine embroideries while bringing up two boys. Five years ago she set up her business designing and producing embroidery kits of a more contemporary folk style that now sell all over the world.

In this workshop, Maria will teach you how to design your own cross stitch charts, taking inspiration from her own selection of traditional and modern Christmas motifs. From there you will stitch a festive gift bag using DMC’s new Coloris thread on linen Aida. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even add beads and metallic thread to add some sparkle to your stitching.

Sophie's workshops at the Craft Sanctuary will give you an introduction to two amazing techniques. First you will learn silk shading and needlepainting techniques to embroider the cutest penguin chick design, then in her second workshop, you'll learn the skills to create stunning ribbon embroidery flowers to embellish and finish your piece.

In this workshop, Nancy will teach you a variety of folk-style embroidery stitches while you practise on a doodle cloth. When you're ready, using felt, foam and thread you'll go on to create a festive garland of baubles with a range of designs to choose from – or design your own! Easily transferable to other projects, you’ll be hooked on modern folk style.
